I guess I'm kinda ignorant but what is the difference between true north and magnetic north? which one do the compasses use and why?

Compasses use magnetic north because they are magnets and the pull of the north poll. Magnetic north is just a few degrees east of true north if memory serves.

Best way to explain it. Plus there is maqnatic north, and true north. Compass pull from the magnetic field in the hudson bay area.

Also you have to use the declination diagram at the bottom of map.

Depending on what you are doing. Such as grid azmith and magnatic azmith. you have to convert these based on declination diagram L.A.R.S rule

Ok, good info, I was just wondering, I see apps that say they show "both" norths so I was wondering the difference.

In most of Tennessee, magnetic north and true north are pretty dang close and shouldn't cause a problem for most people using a compass; out west, on the other hand, it's a bit more important. In fact, note the line that says "No Variation" and runs just east of Memphis; along that line, MN and TN are identical.

In reality, it is not an issue here, unless you are traversing a very long distance, or you are surveying. Our declanation is very small here. It is a different story if you go out west, but generally in Tennessee you dont have to worry about it unless you are wanting pin poing accuracy.

Basically, don't worry about it in TN unless you are surveying.

Many GPS units allow the user to set for either "magnetic" or "true North".

Am I correct that either setting results in the same coordinates (even "out West"), while the differences would come in the "bearings" for guidance to a coordinate?

True Wes, it only affects the bearing. Lat/Long has nothing to do with compass readings.

As has been previously stated, in the big picture, this is a moot point for Tennessee, especially west TN. You're probably thinking about a new reality show called "Humphreys County".

One of the cast is a California "hippie" that comes to Tennessee, and on the first show, he shows up at the County Co-Op to buy a load of lime for his "food" plots, but hasn't considered how he's going to transport it, much less spread it, after he's already bought & paid for it. "BSK" the California hippie is quickly befriended by local yokel "Ernest" who seems to go everywhere.

Other shows illustrate what happens when the "hippie" takes up farming, opting for a Chevy truck to pull his farm disc, kills a nice buck simply by "uglying" it, and has his ATV whisked away by a speeding train. This show has everything for a new Merle Haggard song, including getting bitten by a snake and dancing in the rain. Cast member "Ernest" will be teaching BSK how to bowhunt in next week's episode, "Ernest Goes Bowhunting".
