Trout - please explain

My dad was cleaning a trout the other day and found these small rocks in it's stomach. Can someone explain to me why this trout would have swallowed these rocks? We've never seen this before.

Very interesting.
Total guess but I would say it got them while snatching something else off the bottom.

How big was the trout?
Rainbow, brown or what?
 
Did a quick search and this is actually kinda common apparently.
General consensus is they get them while eating other things.
 
Flip a few rocks over in a trout stream and you'll find the nymphs or larva they're eating. In the process I'm sure ingesting a few pebbles is common.
