Has anyone ever fished the Little Red River?
We are thinking about going at the end of the month.
I want to trout fish, I have never trout fished.
Is this the time of year to catch trout?
What to expect?
 
They bite all year long there, it's a tailwater with consistent temps year round. I would call ahead to see what the water levels are like right now, there was a lot of rain in the area during spring and early summer this year and water levels have been high all summer as a result, that should be getting back to normal by this time but still would be wise to look into it, especially if you plan on wading.
 
If you want to fly fish over there I can hook you up with a guide who is top notch. Otherwise its an awesome river just have to make sure its wadeable. If your going there are lots of little fish shops around Heber Springs who could point you in the right direction I even think people rent cabins and jon boats around there that would be worth checking out.
 
The best time you to catch trout are the days that end in "Y" and the months that have at least one vowel in them. I have caught them in the heat of the summer and I have caught them when I should've been out hunting the cooler weather. There's no wrong time for trout fishing.

The Red, Spring, and White rivers are good rivers to catch trout because the water temp is the same year round. Trout like cold rivers/streams/lakes. During the colder months, the water is actually warmer than the air temperature. Check the regulations, some areas only allow a single barbless hook as a lure. Some areas are catch and release only. And other areas might be closed seasonally for fishing.

Beware of generation, though. When the dams are generating, the water will rise and will make fishing difficult, especially if you are wade fishing. it's probably not as bad if fishing from a boat.

Fly fishing is as hard or as easy as you want to make it. You can get a couple of Wooly Buggers and some sink tip fly line and catch a lot of fish on any of the Arkansas rivers that way, easy to cast and simple casts quartering downstream. There is a group in Memphis known as the Mid South Fly Fishers, they offer a great book complete w/ maps for all of the Arkansas and some TN Tailwaters, you can also get a casting lesson from someone there if desired but the book is indespensible for getting to the good areas up there(wading or boat), especially if you haven't been before. here's a link.

I took my wife to the little red in the spring of last year to teach her how to fly fish. I took her to Arkansas because the fishing is more consistent for a beginner. At the time they had just enacted slots on the river...we fished with a guide one day out of Lindsey's and then rented a boat there the rest of the time. The guide fished out of the ramp at Lindsey's.

With the slot size limits in place over a year now the fishing should be wonderful. At the time the Caney had more large fish than the little red, that trend has flipped on its head.

You should have some serious big fish action even for beginners. Get a guide the first day then copy what they show you. It is easy to drift fish out of rental boats with flies and common to have days of >50 fish.
