trouble shoot a load problem

I have been workign up a load for a friend of mine's 7mm-08

a little background...
RCBS rockchucker, and RCBS dies

I can seat the bullet on 1 or 2 rounds fine and the depth is correct and the overall length measures within specs.

bout the 3rd round I feel the bullet seat and its like its grabbing it and pulling it back out on the down stroke of the press.

now the over all length is way to long and you can see on the bullet itself where is was pulled out.


any solutions?

this is with new brass(no once fired) and with 140gr Nosler ballistic Silvertips

I have no clue how to solve the problem other than blame the dies as being faulty

I know it maybe a dumb question -

One thing comes to mind, are you using enough lube on the brass? I know when I load I make sure I have the brass lubed good.

sounds like you need to adjust your seater die, inspect inside of die, take apart and clean die, start from scratch with adjustment just like the instructions say. As far as Allen's question I only use lube to resize.

unlock the ring and back your seater up 2-3 turns and then readjust your seater plug down to the correct length

Do like 14 said pluse check the case length make sure it is in spec. Trim the cases inside and out. Only use lube to resize but do use it. Bound to be somthing else but I can't think what.

I used lube to resize

have pulled the die apart each time to get the bullet "unstuck" from the seater plug.

then started from scratch...

run case up, screwed die down then backed off (think) 1/2 turn, then adjust seater plug to desired depth.

1 or 2 rounds successful then the snd or 3rd gets pulled back out or stuck.

its as though the tip of the ballistic S.T. is too pointy and is forced into the plug to far?


I'm at a loss.

will double check the brass today when I get home to make sure its not to long from the start.

What Mr. Big said, back die out couple turns, lock it dwn, adjust seater plug to desired length. Should fix prob.

Sounds like you have a die that has a roll crimp. You are probably screwing the die into the press too far and so when you seat the bullet the taper for the crimp grabs the sides of the bullet. Then, when you retract the cartridge the bullet pulls back out of the case.

As others have suggested, back the die out of the press 2 or so turns, then screw the seating plunger down until you are at the proper OAL. If you are still having problems you should consider scrapping that seating die and buying another because it's likely out of spec.

Quite right. Although many of your rifle seater dies push the bullet on the ogive, this could still be a possibility. It wouldn't hurt to check this as well.

Two things...
1) Did you trim the brass? If not then this may be casusing excessive seating pressure by it wanting to crimp on the upstroke.

2) My dad had problems with a .338 Win Mag RCBS die with it causing a deformity/ring just below the tip on Accubonds. He contacted RCBS who told him to send it back in, that they set up their seating plungers to be used with the ogive from a Sierra bullet. Since the ogive with the Accubond (bonded Ballistic Tip) was substantially different, they "fixed" the seating plunger to be used with this bullet for him free of charge. You may be having a similar problem.
