On a boat
Which would last longer, a 24 volt or a 12 volt and carry an extra battery? I currently have a 12 volt and if I'm going to be trolling a lot like for crappie,I carry an extra battery. Thinking about upgrading motors and was wanting some opinions.
 
i dont think 24v and 12v is in matter of lasting but in the need of what boat you got, most heavy bass boats use 24v cuz they need big thrust motors to move it. if you have a lighter alum. boat id stick with 12v and carry extra bat. unless your in a hurry to get nowhere fast
 
It's all according to model motor and boat. For crappie you're not looking for speed. In most cases unless the wind is bad either will do fine. Unless I just had to have the 24 I would wear the 12 out and then buy a new one. They are a lot cheaper than a good 24. I've used both 12 and 24 all day with no problems.. And if you're not looking for speed or have a heavy boat the 12 is gonna do the job.
 
The way I understand it is that a 24 volt system has more amps, therefore producing more power through the increased amps. A single 12 volt battery only has half the amps of a 24 volt system and could not produce as many amps or power. The decreased amount of amps in a 12 volt system would cause you to use more battery life to achieve the same results. A 24 volt system should provide more power and provide it longer than if you used two 12 volt batteries. I may be wrong but that is the way I have had it explained to me by someone else.
 
I have a 24v motorguide on my 2072. Its a 75lb thrust but I bowfish with it, and seldom run it past 5 or 6 of the 20 something speeds. It will last 8 hours with ease, probably more, but I'm usually not out any longer than that. On full speed, it will throw you out of the boat if your not paying attention.

It's not on a heavy boat, 18' aluminum. Slow and steady, on 2 or 3 out of 5 speeds, depending on wind with my 12 volt. Was wondering if a 24 volt with more ft. lbs would last longer since it should be on a lower setting. Not worried about top speed as much as run time. Maybe I just need to shut up and fish.

A 46 or 50 should do all you want... And a lot cheaper than a 24. I had a 75lb 24 on my 17... Too much... Way too much.

I have a 24 82lb on my Skeeter.... And it's over 20 foot long. Havent needed full power fishing wind.
 
I'd like to put one of these 80 lb 24 v trolling motors on my 1432 tin boat, that thing would cruise with one of those motors :D

I have a 17.5 foot aluminum with a 55 pound thrust minn kota 12 volt and 2 batteries in series. I crappie fish also. When spider rigging with 2 hot batteries I have to pull a drift sock to keep my speed down at the lowest setting. Be careful with getting too much power if you spider rig. You will be constantly on off on off and will struggle to keep your speed steady and slow enough. My 55 pound 12 volt on 5 will run fast enough to do go from spot to spot when jig fishing in spring.
 
I run a 24v, 71 lb thrust on my 18.5 Stratos. I run on setting 1 and have good results spider rigging. I prefer the on and off the pedal to let the jig fall into the school vs pulled through. My trolling motor will last longer than me on any given day.
 
Is there a benefit of running in series and if so how do you do it? Right now both batteries are under my front deck and I installed 2 plugs so when 1 gets weak I just plug the trolling motor into the other.
