This weekend I scouted and put up a few ladder stands. One of the places that I put a stand I could not find a tree that provided and cover at the right hight. I decided to strap the stand to a huge oak with a trunk about 4' wide. This tree does not have any branches or cover at the stand seat hight but, I figured being that wide I could use it as a backdrop. Anyone ever have any sucess using a large tree as backing instead or foliage for cover?
 
Yep...just watch moving around because they'll bust you coming in from the sides cause your profile will be standing out.
 
Yep had goodluck except like stated above that if you move when they approach from the side you get busted. I had a heck of a spot on my old kentucky lease and the only good tree was huge pine tree about 3ft at the base. 16ft thought was to low due to the way deer traveled thru that pinch. So I hung a lock on at 36ft.

it makes it very difficult to attach a safety harness

Thanks for all the advice. I think I am in a good spot and it should pay off. There is an itersection of three trails coming form two soybean fields about 20 yards out.

Lawernce - thanks for the reminder on the safety harness. I always wear one but, did not give it a thought this time. I will get back up there and tie a rope to above branches to attach too or extend my harness strap to reach a solid branch.
 
Yes sir, have had some super stands over the years in ancient old trees in fencelines and on old homesites! Ive had to use the 15 ft ratchet straps many times and had some even they wouldnt reach around!
