This weekend I got the squirrel dogs out and they were going crazy over a small 8 foot den tree? I hit the tree up and down with a stick, and a Flying squirrel came out of a hole, climbed to the top and flew down the ridge!!! Then 3 more came out and did the same thing!!! The dogs didn't know what to do following a squirrel in the air!!! They followed them to a pine tree and we waited and watched as they climbed to the top to glide off again!!! Pretty cool!!!!

Out of all the years hunting I have never seen a Flying squirrel. Didn't really believe they were really out there!! It was a great hunt and one of the dogs I got from Tikkashooter is really comming alive!!!

my dad was hunting Shelby Forest and found a nest of them (mother plus 2 or 3 young ones) when I was a kid. The tree they were in had blown down in a storm, and he managed to carry them home and build a house for them in a really big bird cage. We fed them and they got to be pretty big over the course of a couple of months. When they looked old enough, we left the cage open and they left, probably for the wooded lot across the street.

It was really interesting feeding them every night. They are just like gray squirrels - they stash most of their food instead of eating it. The funniest thing happened in the fall. We kept giving them pecans, and they kept taking them from us and putting them in their 2-story bird house. Finally, after a few weeks, the bottom fell out of it because it was completely full of nuts. Their instincts tell them what to do alright!

we had 3 one time my uncle found in a nest when he cut timber we raised them with a eyedropper until they were big and we turned them loose. we caught one with a broke leg while we were coon hunting about 2 weeks ago my little cousin is taking care of it until it heals im 17 and ive seen a crapload of flyin squirrels go in any woods find a small den tree and shake the crap out of it and watch your head i found out this the hard way lol
