We always called this a crab apple tree, but I'm told that they drop early in the fall? This tree does not start dropping until November, and I have seen fruit still on it at the end of December. The tree is around 30 or 40 years old I guess, and deer love it. What is it? How can I get more?

I swear that appears to either a wild or ornamental type pear. I think I can see the stone cells on the fruit. Crabs wouldnt have those cells. And the leaves looks like pear as well. Cut one open and see what you got. If the deer love it, graft you some more.

After doing a little research, I think your right. It is some type of ornamental pear. I guess it is similar to a bradford pear, but the fruit is larger and the leaves are not the same. Whatever it is, deer have always LOVED IT.

Some rootstocks that ornamental pears like Bradfords and Clvevelands are grafted onto will make small fruit like that. Could be a rootstock gone wild. Very hard to know exactly without testing but not hard to clone with grafting. Search on youtube for pear grafting videos. Get ya some ohf 97 pear rootstock and graft it about March.

Does it have "spurs" or "thorns" (stems that give the appearance of thorns)? Its probably a wild pear. I have a few and deer love them. My buddy that was in grad school with me studied the genetics of wild pears.

No spurs. Its at an old home site, so more than likely it was planted at some point in time. I'm really interested in grafting, gonna check into further. I planted a dozen apple trees three years ago, and something to drop later in the season like these things do would make a great addition. We have plenty of ag, so I would like to focus on other food sources now.

I was trimming some trees and noticed some of these same trees in my yard this weekend. To be honest, I'm not sure if I trimmed them or cut them down completely. Guess I need to go back and check.
