Sorry No picture! The tree has orange fruit that looks like a persimmon. The bark is black and gray

No fuzz on the fruits
They almost look like a plum
I can see the trees from my house but are on private property
Definately not persimmon
the tree bark is black with a distinct gray pattern

Yeah ditto on the pic.. I could tell ya if I seen the pictures.

Some forms of Figs are a orangish/green color.

The fruit is described as smelling like "rancid butter" and the smell is lingering.
The Ginkgo is the only one of its family worldwide.

sounds like a persimmon, persimmon trees have very dark bark, grey bark, and also blackish grey bark. I'm not doubting your word, but what you're describing sounds like a persimmon.

Is the tree fairly short in height say like 10 to 15 feet ?
Is the fruit in clusters/groups ?
If so then it sounds like it could be a variety of crabapple.
