All, I ordered 50 Chinese Chestnuts and may pick up a few fruit trees. I am debating putting them in a garden spot as some of you guys are doing until the fall or actually putting them in containers. I am leaning towards the container route possibly as I do not have a good garden spot and would have to do the garden spot at my dad's place and I do not want to impose om him to water in the summer. Also wouldn't I need to fence them in as he does have deer come through his yard all of the time.

If I go the container route, here are my questions:
Where do you get your containers?
How big a container do you use?
What soil mixture do you use?
Any other suggestions?

These would be placed in a sunny spot in my yard and maybe moved to a partial sun spot once it gets hot. I would plant them in the fall. Thanks.
 
I have done a few trees that way, you really have to water alot over the summer.

I got my containers (5 Gallon) at a local nursery, I just asked them about it and they sold me some of their old ones for cheap. I just used potting soil that I bought in bags at Co-Op. I have since switched to a garden spot just because of all the watering that had to be done with containers. Plus side of containers though, dont have to dig the dang tree back up lol
 
I may try american chestnuts next year in my next go around. My plan is to plan about 50 chestnut type trees a year, and another 25 of some type of fruit. Probably something blight resistant.

If your going to plant them this fall.. And they are just sapplings now. You can use 1 gallon containers if not smaller. 3 gallon would be overkill.

Thanks. 1 Gallon would be a little cheaper from both container and potting soil needed.

Found some websites you can order containers from but going to check some local nurseries first.
 
the best place to get them is at a nursery. I got 50 3 gal pots for free the other day at a nursery. Also go where they are building new buildings (landscaping) and ask the workers if you can haul away their pots. 9 times out of 10 they will give them to you!

TS, I went to Home Depot today and picked up Nature's helper. It is called soil conditioner. It was the only thing they had in nature's helper brand. Is this the correct stuff? Only reason I ask is appears this stuff is to be mixed so can I just use this or do I need to mix it with topsoil? Thanks.
 
You can do both. I potted up 50 or so crabapples the other day and i mixed it with top soil. Only because i didnt want to spend that much! The nurseries use it straight, but you can definately cut 50/50 and it will work great.

Like I said I mixed due to money.

Thanks guys for all of your input. Successfully potted 51 Chinese Chestnuts this weekend and put in an order yesterday for 50 more crabapples with NWTF. May pick up a few Keifer pears. If anyone sees a good deal on keifer pears, let me know. The best price I have seen thus far for bare root seddling keifer pears is 8.50/each.
 
Jarred alittle tip that will help with watering and caring for your potted trees. You can plant your pots it will help hold in the moisture in the heat of the summer.2 ways to do it.You can use mulch and bury the pots or dig a trench for them.It does not have to be deep. 4 to 6 inches is enough to cover the drainage holes.After you put the pots in the trench just back fill with the dirt you removed. This saves water,it lets you water more efficently. It will also keep your trees from getting blown over in a hard storm.

Thanks, I was planning on going the mulch route. Definitely will like to save on my water bill. Planned on setting up a sprinkler where I can just cut it on and off when I need to water them. Should be pretty easy.

I'll share alittle secert.If you go to HomeDepot and they have alot of broken bags of assorted soil. You can usally talk to someone and get a Pallet full of Dirt for 15 or 20 bucks.I mix it all up and have excellent results.Potting soil,top soil,composted manure,humus all gets mixed. A cheap way to fill alot of containers.I've done the same thing at Lowes and Walmart.
Most people won't buy a broken bag and They like to keep thier lots clean.

Lesson lerned today. Need to get some 3 gallon containers for crabapples. Roots on the ones I got in would not fit in 1 gallon containers.
 
You know, the 2 nurseries I have checked with actually sell them even though they are used. One I checked with was asking 33 cents a piece for 1 gallon ones.

I don't know any landscapers but thought I might start calling some of these landscaping companies and see if I could get some.
