If you were going to buy a traditional muzzlelaoder what would you buy?It will be used for deer hunting a little and informal target shooting mostly.I have looked at T/C hawkens, but that is 800$.Thanks for your help.I have looked at some used muzzleladers online and some looked tempting.I know there are some very knowledgable folks on here.Thanks for your help.
 
There are tons of old TCs out there that can be had at a reasonable price. Just beware of corroded out bores from the effects of lack of cleaning when using evil pyrodex.

With that said, I feel that the Lyman Great Plains rifle is more true to form to traditional styling than any of the TCs. 54 caliber would be my choice.
 
Me too. The Lyman GPR is probably the best value factory gun available.
After a break in period of about 100 shots, they're one of the most accurate muzzleloaders around too. I've been shooting my .54 for 3 years now & I own scoped guns that aren't as accurate!
 
If I was going to buy new, it would be a Great Plains Rifle over a T/C Hawken. The GPR has a 4" longer barrel and a slower rate of twist compared to the Hawken and is cheaper as well.

I have a T/C Hawken and 4 Renegades. I'm kinda partial towards the Renegade model. When it comes to buying used, first thing is to check and see if it's loaded. Finding one loaded happens way more than it should. Check the bore to see if it's rusty and how new or worn the rifling looks. I prefer the older model Renegades with double set triggers and the square notch rear sight and blade front sight. The newer ones with a single trigger, v-notch rear sight and bead front sight don't shoot as well for me as the older ones do.

There's a Renegade in the classifieds right now.

The T/C Hawken is a great rifle. So is T/C Renegade and T/C New Englander. Lyman GPR and CVA Hawken. I'd look at some used rifles because sometimes they can be bought cheap.
