Might be in the market for a tractor. Going to need a bucket, bush hog and disc. For 9.5 ac, 2ac in pasture the rest in pasture that has been let go about 3-4 yrs and needs cleaned up and some stumps pulled. Funds are tight as always.

What should I be looking at that will get the job done without requiring congressional spending?

I am one of those more practical types that doesn't care what it looks like, I just want the job done, low cost, low maintainance, and easy to fix when it does break.

buckets are overated,cant really do a whole lot with them,you can save money there.Pulling stumps?Thats a tough job.Put a salt block on em.A 35 hp tractor or so should be able to pull a 5 ft bush hog and 6 ft disc.Hope that helps.
 
I would not go less than 45 horse power with a 35-40 hp pto

Also spend the extra money and get 4 wheel drive

I would have anticipated a lot more than 3k! Im curious about this too...think it would be nice to have one to do some of the odds and ends work around my place, but always thought they would be way too expensive!
 
I got a 2007 kubota 4x4 35 hp. comes with a front end loader and a woods backhoe.Got about 100 hours on it.
Paid $22,000.00 for it a year and a half ago...make me an offer.

you will get what you pay for. i personally think front end loader are overated on small tractors. if you think you need a loader i would want one on a bigger tractor 50+ horsepower.
 
I'll 2nd StovePipe. Diesel 35-50 Hp. Brand name- Deere, Ford, Kubota or Massey Ferg. $5000- 7500. Used tractors can be fine but I would avoid used Bush Hogs.

Lot of good ideas here. Thanks! So would it be reasonable to expect that I can get a good serviceable tractor with implements for under 10K?

When we reclaim some of the pasture its going to need disced up and replanted. I think I will need a bucket for moving some soil & rocks and spreading gravel.
 
Get at least a 35 hp tractor. 4 wheel drive, hydrostatic transmission, with a bucket. If you get a 2 wheel drive that is less than 45 hp forget the bucket.
 
Bear with me Im new to the tractor thing.

Someone told me to get an older tractor prior to planned obsolescence. Said most of the newer tractors have a lot of "breakable" parts that require expensive parts/repairs.

Anything I should AVOID?
 
I noticed a bunch for sale just riding around Wilson county yesterday,might can get a good deal now,look for a good one.Nothing is more frustrating than working on a tractor all the time.
 
I agree FH! We have a good tractor, but it seems as though we are working on it just as long as we are riding it. Most of it is probably taking care of it. It's our baby :) It is very time-consuming, but I like doing the work.

The better the tractor = less time you are working on it = less time on the farm = more free time.
 
That is exactly what I am trying to avoid. A lot of down time and repair bills. Especially since I don't know much about tractors.

Iknow any tractor can break down and need repairs, is there any particular models to look at or to avoid?
 
Avoid fresh paint. It's cheap by the gallon. If you trust the hour meter stay below 3000 hrs. I have a 24 yr old Ford with 1800 hours. 2 front tires and a battery in 8 years of use.
Does the seller have service reccords?
 
about 3 years ago i bought a new 28 hp mahindra 4x4 with front end loader. i use a 5 foot bush hog and cut 10 acres 4 times a year. the motor does get extra warm but not hot. i just make sure the radiator is kept clean. i would never own a tractor without a frontend loader now. spend the extra and get it.
 
I have been using a Massey Ferguson 35 with a 5 foot bush hog, box blade and a pond scoop for several years. I can trailer it to any of my leases and its reliable. Not as fancy as some of the newer models but generally expensive, reliable and easy to work on.
 
I bought a used 2004 Kubota L3400, Diesel 34HP, front end loader, 4wd, HST, roof, bushhog. Paid 11k. I love it, although I've got an issue with it running hot after a few hrs. Getting that looked at as we speak.
 
I use a New Holland 4wd Hydrostatic, frontend loader, 6ft BH.. I can't place the exact HP, but it doesn't have a problem at all pulling the bush hog or the finish mower. Boss man paid 4500 for it, with very low hours.


New Hollands have a plastic gas tank mounted under the dash, the firewall has gaps in it. I've replaced 3 gas tanks on it from the heat melting the tank, and diesel dripped down on the motor.. She smoked like a train!
 
I have a massey ferg 150 its a 1965 model and its tough as nails. Motor has never seen a day of repair. Bucket on the front, three point on the back. Yes beware of fresh paint.
