The limit definitely affected my personal goals, but I can't speak for hunters as a whole. I know a lotta guys who would fill their last tag on that buck, and I would too if it was late in the season.
 
Its all up to the individual. nothing wrong with either decision. I have passed a 2.5 year old 8pt with great potential twice. he was killed on the adjacent property Sunday afternoon. no regrets on me though
 
I think you made the right call. If it was later in the rut or season and I wasn't on anything better, I'd definitely use my last buck tag on him. But knowing you've got a bigger deer Out there and that the area you're hunting does Not have a whole lot of people who know it- pass. Still- my trigger finger would've been really itching some fierce! Nice patience!

My ladder stand sits just behind the cedar tree..

I had him at 25-30 yards working a scrape broad side..

No doubt. And without any reservation whatsoever, I would encourage anyone who would be happy with him to shoot him with their first tag or their last. But a lot of guys will also do exactly what you did. That scenario probably plays out several hundred times across the state over the course of a season, and thousands of times over the course of several seasons. Without question that leads to the survival of a lot of "decent" bucks (most of them young) that would die if that second tag wasn't also the last tag.

So if older age class and bigger deer is a priority, the limit helps. I'm not sure that should be the priority from a statewide management standpoint, so I'm not here to trumpet the 2 buck limit. It definitely benefits my personal hunting style/goals, but I'm undecided on it philosophically. Both sides of the argument have merit. I was just making an observation that this is a good example of the limit in action.

I've never "tagged out" on bucks. The limit has had no affect at all on my deer hunting decisions personally. But I think it would really suck to be done the first week in November, so I don't think you'll regret your decision on this one.

I think the 2 buck limit is a good compromise between meat and trophy hunters. I will never support a 1 buck limit
 
If he can by me and all I saw was the side view. I might have pulled the trigger. I would have then been disappointed in his spread once I got to him. Seeing he is not outside of his ears. I would have done the same as you and let him go.

That's interesting, I thought he looked a lot better walking straight to me than from the side. I'll have the video up in a few days and post a link so you can see. He was impressive for a young deer.

He is tall and is a good looking deer in the first pic you posted. The second pic is blurry and hard to tell much. The third picture was the one I was referencing. If all I could see was the tall rack from the side I would be tempted. I typically do not shoot anything that is not outside of the ears, spread wise.
