Can somebody school me on the process for "toning" tree dogs to come back in with an E collar? I've heard the term and seen guys talk about it but don't know how it works.

For a bird dog, I trained to recall to a series of tweets on a whistle by blowing my whistle after giving my here command. Once they recall to the whistle, you just tone them while blowing "here". Basically you're transferring the command to another sound.

I did this with my GSP. As mentioned, I just hit the beep while recalling him verbally and gradually phased out the verbal command.
You call your dog, if he doesn't respond hit the tone button. If he doesn't respond give him a little shock till he comes. Repeat in a couple days. They learn what comes after the tone if they don't correct their action right then.

How old is Margie? E collars, poorly used, can mess a dog up.
If the shock is adjustable turn it way down don't go to much to fast and don't let her know it's you shocking her just yell couple
Times if nothing a couple beeps and then hit with juice

She just turned 1, I don't have a E collar that I'd put on her now but it's something we might work on later if she don't grow outta the not coming in. I really don't want to resort to a collar but then again if it'll save her from getting in trouble on a road or something I will.
Speaking of dogs here's a pic of Sib telling on one. She's a good ole gal and a good little hunting buddy.

Pay her good with praise and treats or kibble when she comes back for a while and you may not need the shock feature. Honestly, vibration hits my dogs harder than the low levels of shock.
If you don't have one yet I've had great luck with the Amazon collars they have beep, vibrate and shock that you can adjust

I always set the stimulation at a low level. While hanging out, start at 1. Go up 1 level at a time until you notice an ear twitch or sign that they felt it. Then go up 1 level.
Once you train multiple recall commands both verbally and by tone, if the dog is overly excited and ignoring the tone, give them little stimulation. If they ignore it, turn it up 1 level and tone/stimulate again. The idea is not to hurt the dog but get their attention. It could save your dogs life and they will learn what comes after the tone.

This is one of the hardest things for me when I am teaching a young pointing dog recall when they first are allowed to go off check cord in the woods. Dogs out of range not sure what he is doing or smelling, but I need the dog to recall. I've done like others on here has said. I try to Teach multiple sounds and actions, like multiple languages.
