It finally warmed up enough to get out and get a little work done. I was able to clear out a spot around a waterhole and plant 5 sawtooths. Didn't get the tree tubes around them, but hope to in the next couple of days. I hope to get about 15 more planted in this spot before green-up.

I think so, but can't be 100% sure. I planted 3 on a dry ridge last spring. They got 2 1/2 gal. of water per week every other month (every other month I wasn't able to water them). It was very dry last summer and all 3 of them made it.

How long did it take to get to that size from seed?How tall are they now.?

FH I started those in my basement about this time last year. They are only 2 1/2 to 3 feet. You have to look at the picture pretty close to see the sawtooths. You may be looking at the cane that is supporting the trees. I have some that are 2 years old I raised from seed that are about 5 feet tall and about 1/2" at the base, but they where some of my best that I kept here at the house to baby them for a few years to really get them off to a good start. I want to see if I can get them to produce in five years.
 
If there are any trees nearby I would cut one down and plant the trees in the downed tree top. This is the best way to keep the deer away
 
Sawtooth oak. Very fast growing for an oak tree, and with good care can start producing acorns in 5-7 years instead of 20 or more with other types of oaks.

As woodchuck said they are oaks. Once they start producing they are supposed to produce every year and are very heavy producers at maturity . They start dropping about two weeks before White oaks. They are neither White or Red oaks but are in the Cerris family. It takes 18 months for the acorn to mature kinda like red oaks.
