Ok this is just to get things started.
What all different categories do we need in the cookbook?

Do we want to break it down like, venison, squirrel, rabbit etc then have beef, pork, chicken, fish etc?

Or just "wild game & fish"
"casseroles"

Just post your suggestions and I will put it in this post and we will edit as it grows / improves.

STARTERS:

SIDES:

DRINKS:

MAIN COURSES:
BEEF
PORK

BREAKFAST:

FISH & FOWL:

FROM THE GRILL:

SMOKED GOODIES:

CAMPFIRE COOKING:

WILD GAME:
VENISON
RABBIT
SQUIRREL

SOUPS:

SANDWICHES:

DESERTS:

Perhaps sections such as: Starters & Sides; Main Dishes - with subcategories like Beef/Pork, Fish, Poultry; and Deserts..

Definitely don't need a vegan section - this is a deer hunting site.

A general suggestion off the top of my head:

Breakfast
Beverages
Appetizers
Salads
Soups
Side Dishes
Main Dishes
Grilling & Meat
Desserts

I would suggest that under something like Grilling & Meat, that the recipes that use beef be grouped together, deer be grouped together, etc. Under Main Dishes, casseroles could be grouped together, etc.

That looks good,..I would suggest putting meat into the main dishes and maybe expanding the grillin section to include other cooking styles such as smoking, dutch ovens, foil wrapped stuff cooked in coals and such. It could be a section to share a variety of cooking technics and tips for all differant types of food....just a thought... :)
Change Grilling to Outdoor Cooking, maybe?

How about campfire cooking section.

Grilling and outdoor cooking, ie: dutch ovens etc. are totally different things.

Again, just a suggestion.

We do foil-wraps on our Weber grill. I don't know if that would then be in grilling or in campfire cooking.

Are we doing categories as simply an attempt to organize the creation of the cookbook or as a way to prompt people's creativity for sending in recipes or as a way to make the completed cookbook user-friendly?

I humbly suggest that the index be more than an afterthought. Nothing irritates me more than an index that is simply an alphabetical list of recipe names because sometimes recipe names are not descriptive and often illogical - "Scrumptious Chicken Dish" should be under C for Chicken, not S for Scrumptious.

Ruger and Greendoe,

if Ya'll will come up with the categories, i will busy myself with the collection of recipes. I can then sort the recipes into thier proper categories for the first draft.

....What do you invision as the end product?...spiral bound to lay down flat on every page?..photo quality pics or hand illistrations,or anything that at all? What type of paper?
What kind of time frame do you think your lookin at to have it completed and available?...decent cook books probably don't jump togeather real quick...
...how many will have to be sold to break even?..a minimum pre purchase may be a requirement unless the execs are going to roll the ball...just thinkin out loud here.. :)
All good questions. Spiral bound is great. Diehard Hunter said no pictures. It will not be quick. Printing is the deal-breaker and that is what killed the earlier efforts.

Final product, a useful, informative, very nice cookbook.
Spiral is a must in my opinion, nothing worse than one that one lay flat.
I would say a very nice quality photo for the front cover and after that, no need for pictures.
Paper choice, depends on the printing process and publisher I would imagine.
Time frame, I would guess a year minimum before it is finished.
No way to know how many will have to be sold until we find out how much it will cost to produce it.
Pre-pay would be nice.

What ever you do remember grilling and smoking are two totally different things.

Grilling is hot and fast cooking.

Smoking is low and slow cooking.

i am thinking spiral bound, i hate a book that closes while I'm cooking. if we go the way i'm thinking, there won't be a break even cost, we will just print the ones that are paid for, and I can print from 1 to however many we need. it will be on heavy bond paper. As for time frame? who knows, but I have time to work on it right now. What i really need is alot of recipes. there really aren't that many in the forum itself. As of this moment, i have about 30, and that doesn't make much of a cookbook.

I a planning to take this thing to a company that does lab manuals and other such items. they can make it look any way we want it to, at a lot less cost than a publisher. there will be no minimums to print, and we can get what we want. i have done this for years for text books, and it is a really quick turn around at minimum expense. of course, going this route we will not be able to print recipes that are not your own (i.e. off an internet site).
