I don't know about you guys, but the heat was just brutal this year for opening weekend for me. I can't remember an opening weekend when I didn't see a single deer. It looks like the numbers took a hit as a result of the temps. These are harvest numbers according to the TWRA's Harvest Report. These are opening weekend kill numbers for the whole state.


2007: 2547
2008: 3228
2009: 2239
2010: 2434
2011: 2811
2012: 3127
2013: 3076
2014: 2764
2015: 2526
2016: 1744 (so far with a few more to probably roll in)

County by county, WMA to WMA, numbers appear to be significantly lower this year. My trail cameras had mostly night activity for the past four or five days too. I can only assume the heat had everything to do with that too. Here's to hoping for a significant cool down soon.

No doubt about it, the heat curtailed daylight deer activity, but more importantly, it kept many hunters at home in the house watching college football among other things. The below average kill total is a reflection of both. Good stuff, thanks for sharing.

I had deer in the plot every evening by 6:00 pm est in 90+ degree heat. I couldn't believe it.

Other than doing a few chores the heat kept me home... ridiculously hot up here..

What TNhunter said. I think it was more the hunters than the deer that caused lower numbers. I hunted hard and saw a good handful of deer. I thought the hunting was great this weekend.

Heat wasnt the main reason I stayed out of the woods but it helped make my decision on not going. What times approx and places (food, water, thicket) did you see most deer?

I was seeing numerous does on white oaks in the timber at 5pm central. I just wasn't close enough to the "hot tree".

right at first light, 830 am, and once the sun went down to where the field was in shade, up until dark. Mornings were mostly at creek crossings near thicket and fields and evenings were more toward field edges. I also hunted Laurel hill last weekend and deer were coming out around sunset to eat in the fields as well.

Same down here, we broke records both days, 96 on Saturday and 98 on Sunday. :shock:

This heat isn't like a warm up when its already been cool for a while, the deer have been living in this heat for months with no break so far, they are on a normal daily routine. The heat did however keep lots of hunters out of the woods I'm sure, I know it did me as I hunted a grand total of 3 hours all wknd.

I only hunted Saturday morning. Watching football all afternoon. Yesterday I didn't wanna go for an afternoon sit when the feels like temp was 94.

They were eating on acorns and browse in the woods Saturday morning. Saturday afternoon they started coming in the standing corn and oats around 5:15. and they just kept coming. Ended up over 20 deer before dark. Could not believe it being 90 degrees. Temps kept hunters out of the woods more than it kept deer from moving. It did not keep me from hunting but it deter me from taking my climber to some of our better buck spots. It also persuaded me to wait before I shot a doe because I did not want to have to deal with it in the heat.

The possibility of cleaning/processing a deer in the heat kept me at home. First opening weekend that I have ever missed.

It is hot. But I'm not bowhunting because I didn't buy a bow stamp. With a two buck limit I will wait till ml and gun to hunt.

Saw Deer Sat am and pm, no bucks just does... saw does sunday am too, did not hunt pm.
Nothing close enough to shoot.

I've hunted two mornings and one evening and saw 0 deer. It has been hot. I think this cool down will get them up and moving.
