TN master logger

Just signed up for the TN master logger course that starts tomorrow morning in waverly. I have been very interested in forestry and habitat management ever since the purchase of a new property which is almost 200 acres of timber. I love learning about this kinda stuff! arty:

I just wish some who had Master Logger certification actually logged that way! Some of the worst logging operations I've ever seen where done by Master Logger certified companies.

Same here,we had one that wouldn't even come back and fix the road back to normal like they promised

I'm planning another timber sale this year and we are only accepting bids from Master Loggers. If TDEC gets involved due to an environmental issue with a logger you are liable unless you hired a Master Logger. I would hope you generally end up with a better project using a Master Logger.

From what I've seen, that would not be the case. The best logging jobs I've seen were done by very small, independent loggers. That doesn't mean small loggers always do a good job, but the best jobs I've seen were done by small, independent loggers.

I also tend to see better jobs done by loggers when the job is part of a long-term timber plan. Loggers will do a good job if they think the job will be reoccurring every few years. It's the one-time, whole-property jobs that end up being environmental disasters.

One reason I pay a consulting forester to handle my sale is because I only go out for bids every 10 years or so but a consulting forester goes out for bids every month and a logger is less likely to stiff them because they won't be allowed to bid an another property. I also tell my forester up-front to only invite quality loggers to bid on our timber. It doesn't always work: I once hired an architect for a home addition and used his recommended builder who went out of business...fiasco.

Definitely one of the best reasons to use a consulting forester. I don't, simply because I'm using the same logger time after time now. But if I hadn't found that logger...

I had one of the state forestors out at my property Friday before last. He recommended having a private forester develop a long range forest plan for my 15-17 acres of woods.

Any recommendations for a good one for Lincoln county?
