I assume there has not been a topic posted on this yet? They really don't have a website that I know of. They are posting everything on a FB page. They are catching ducks and placing gps trackers on them to study movements and feeding habits in the area. As well as migration information year to year. I will be interested to see what the study shows. As I understand they plan to do a report some time this year on duck patterns during the 2020/2021 season. We killed one this year and that had the tracker on for 6 weeks and only really moved 3 times in that time.

banned on Chicksaw NWR and looks like it stayed there a few weeks, moved on to Lake Lauderdale Refuge and hoped around to a few boarding fields for a few weeks. Then moved to Tigrett bottoms for a few days before we killed it in that area.
 
From what they have posted it seems like the duck do not move a lot like I have always thought. They do no stay in one place and then fly several miles for food every day and then return to a roosting location. It seems like they hang around the same general area for a while maybe moving a few hundred yards back and forth but no major moving every day.

Can't wait for their full report. Public/private, refuge/open hunting, day/night... all kinds of good stuff to learn more about. I think there's a similar effort going on with specklebellies and gps trackers.

Never duck hunted before, but I too find this interesting. I'd have sure thought they traveled further than that. Thanks for sharing.
 
I know they have been using the gps trackers on Mottle ducks down in Louisiana. The band system is great but this really allows the biologist to track movement based on so many different variables. Should be a lot of valuable information published.
 
From a duck hunting perspective, hasn't the temps this year been mild? I would think that would influence their movement as well, at least in our neck of the woods? Anxious to see what the ducks do if the forecasted temps next weekend holds. They look brutal for 3-4 days, but it is still a ways out, so that could change. Would also like to see this same study over a very cold winter to see if that changes the duck's daily movement and the researcher's observations any. Food for thought.

They plan to do a year to year study along with comparing weather, rain fall, temperatures and other things. It is not meant to be a 1-2 year study.
 
^^ Great to hear, hopefully they've secured all funding needed to make it happen. I'll be very interested to read about their findings when they're done.

They are trapping them on the refuges, those places are only flooded during hunting season. We don't really have any local Mallards that don't leave the area.
 
Pretty cool data. I know of some others in Arkansas that show a ton more movement. Just the last week of the season had one going from southern AR to northern MO in one trip.
 
I have been Blessed to hunt with veterans from several Northern States this year. The last 5 I hunted with was 2 from Michigan and 2 from Ohio and 1 from Indiana. The guys from Michigan said there refuges where full to the max. They said even there ponds that they hunt have not even froze yet. First time this late in the year they have ever seen that. Now this was just just 2 weeks ago. They texted me Monday and said that the ponds froze now and the refuges are emptying out now. Ohio guys said the same thing. I watched 2 day later and seen wave after wave of Mirgrating ducks over my House this week, Now these groups where like 150 to 15 ducks per group. So yes the weather has a very important role in the push. If they can't eat the have to push. Now Indiana guy said that Wednesday ponds froze enough for there refuges to start emptying out. That's just me I hunted 48 days out of the 60 and hunted many places. The best week was the week of Christmas from Tuesday till that Saturday and we had a great week,
