TN elk poaching case makes news

I'm glad they got caught and hit with a decent fine, but i would have thought the state court would have set restitution higher than the auction price of the last tag. Wouldn't that be the best indicator of what a bull elk is worth in TN?

I think that was just a slap on the wrist compared to what they should have gotten. Should have lost all hunting priveleges for life, lost all firearms, and a much heftier fine. IMO.

This happened about 1-1/2 miles from me. I know or used to know one of the poachers, he's been in trouble before for stealing, sounds like he can't play by the rules. I could have sworn I've heard bull elk here before in the distance, so I probably did.
hunter0925 ,if you took a mans lic away for life what would stop him from having any season open when he wanted it? I know if I lost mine I wouldnt stop hunting just wouldnt be paying every year lmao,I have a lifetime lic & plan on keeping it too :)

Them schmucks apparently just did it for the heck of it. They had no intentions of saving the meat, just dumped it. I imagine it they'd dressed and processed the elk themselves they wouldn't be in trouble.
hunter0925 , what you said makes sense till you consider the moral part. Going to cost me a small fortune to go to NM in sept. If I wanted to break the law , guess I could go over to LBL and climb the fence, its only about 5-6 miles from me as the crow flies. I could borrow one of my friends pontoons , less chance of getting caught and if I did it wouldn't be my boat they confiscate ! lol

Just like the large ring of poachers caught at Ft Campbell a few years ago.
When you took their fine and averaged it out for the number of years they had been doing it, the fine came out less expensive than buying annual licenses.
The elk story is written to make it sound sensational, but thos fines, jail sentences-suspended, and revocation fo hunting licenses are atotals for 5 people. Break it down by person, it isn't very much.
I like the auction tag value. Set that as restitution.
