Anyone already thinking about the elk hunt for this year?
I am assuming that there will be preferance points...so with 13000 applicants...it may never happen for many of us.

But, for a once in a lifetime hunt...Im applying again.
 
no preference points for this hunt,per twra,said nobody would ever get picked ,i will keep putting in til i win or cant see to hunt,mike243
 
I can see the merit in initially not having preference points just to get many people applying annually, maybe thru the 2nd and 3rd years, but after that, why not reward the very people who are continuously supporting this program most?

In the meantime at the very least, there should be a provision that no person can be drawn twice.

the odds are astronomical but i agree with this.

I was lucky enough to be one of the guides. I know it is a long shot but i will put in again. I hope they hold it to 5 for at least one more year. Great time and great job by all involved!
 
im pretty sure there was a 10 year # mentioned in the rules,if i was to hit it twice in a short period of time i would decline,it wouldn't be fair to accept the hunt as i consider it a once in a lifetime advent imo,mike243
 
Anyone who is drawn for an elk tag must wait a minimum of ten years before they can apply again.

Also, with so few tags available and so many hunters putting in, a preference system of any sort (even after a few years) would automatically deter new folks from putting in. In other words, if you don't have top priority and the waiting list is thirty years it's pointless to even enter. Of course all this would change if we were allotting tags by the hundreds but I don't see that happening in the foreseeable future.

Good point if there was unlimited preference point build-up, but not sure it would necessarily be the case.

Perhaps many people will quit applying since their odds are so low?

On the other hand, if one or two preference points were given, it might insure more people continuously apply, as they would have something to lose by losing their preference point(s). Note how President's Island with unlimited preference points gets the most hunters applying annually even though they must forfeit all other quota deer hunts.

IMO, having at least one or two preference points would be more of a "happy median", as it seems hardly fair for one fellow to apply continuously for many years, then another guy justs decides on a whim to enter in Year 7 and he's drawn first year he enters.
 
Now, one thing that could work...50 percent of the tags on preference and 50 percent on open drawing. That would encourage people to keep on applying and not discourage newcomers.
 
What BGG said. After one year of points, assuming the same 13,000 applicants, even those "one-pointers" would "never" be drawn. Even if they got up to 1,000 tags, which will probably never happen in Tennessee, it would take 13 years for the first point people to be drawn. But divide the initial point pool by 5 tags or 10 tags, or even 100 tags. So, if you were new to the draw after the first point year, why bother! Impossible odds for even the first point people, let alone later applicants.

Suggestion for preference points for TN Elk hunting:

I am reccomending that TWRA adopt the policy to apply preference points to the TN elk permits with two drawings. One utiliizing preferance points and the second one being an open drawing.

For the drawing, 50% of the tags would have the preferance points applied. For those that are not successful in that drawing, a second drawing for the the other 50% of the tags would then be conducted. This second drawing would then be open to all applicants.

Although the odds are slim of getting drawn, this would create a populace of resident hunters who will apply year after year and for the new applicants, they will have a fair chance at being drawn.

I'm really not trying to discourage anyone who gets involved, and I admire you for making the effort.
But, IMO your suggestion will never come to pass. I apply in Kentucky every year, as do 40,000 others competing for 1,000 tags, approximately 100 of which are reserved for non-residents. That generates $400,000 in revenue for the Ky wildlife dept. They have no preference point system in place, and obviously, from their standpoint, none is needed, as the number of applicants eager to hunt elk continues to grow year after year, regardless of the lack of a preference point system. Tennessee will never be in that position insofar as numbers are concerned. But, I believe that the same philosophy is present, which I full understand, and am in agreement with. At any rate, good luck(which I had in Kentucky the very first year that I applied, 2006).
 
I will put in for the draw again. I dont have $17,000 to bid on one at ebay. Which in my opinion was truely a joke. I was thouroughly disgusted it was offered that way. Maybe if Im drawn they will allow me to sell mine for $17,000.

That one was on the cheap. A few years ago, Arkansas gave one tag to the Ark Chapter of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation for which they sold raffle chances at a hundred a pop. The other tag that they donated was sold at auction by the RMEF and two deep pockets guys got into a bidding war and stopped at $45,000. The new worlds record was killed this past year on a similar tag, I believe in Utah. The successful bidder could kill one any time, any place in the state. He hired guys to bird dog the biggest bull that they could find. And they did. LOL

Elk are for sale in every state that has them.
 
I think it was a great idea to raise some funds, even though there's not telling what was spent on the event. Still, done for a good cause and I think it should be done every year.
 
I know where the money is supposed to go but it dont matter. Its just saying to hunters across the nation that Tennessee Elk are for sale. Probably better than 95% of the hunters cannot afford a trip out west and to take that one draw and put it up for sale is wrong. And no, not every state sells there elk. And yes it does dissapoint me.

Money went to a good cause, TWF is doing some great things, and I believe Mike is doing a good job.
I dont have the 17k either to spend, but it dont bother me that some do>
