OK late summer scouters and early season bow hunters - tell me what you do to keep those pesky little seed ticks off you? I've tried spraying down with OFF, GATOR etc and all sorts of extra stuff like taping my britches legs to my boots or wearing snake gators to protect my legs, wearing long sleeve shirts in layers, etc. Sometimes I'm more successful in fending off these tiny mutants than others but in general I'd say I've failed in keeping them away. So what will you be doing on Saturday to prevent becoming a tick magnet?

Happy hunting!!!!!!!!!

Allan

Not the answer you want, but I'll be waiting till M.L. and hoping for some frost.
I had a couple of nasty tick bites early this year. Tested positive for Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Not worth it when I still got plenty of time to hunt.

After sitting in the stand last saturday and seeing literally 100's crawling on me makes me want to wait til cold weather gets here.

Now im ate up with tick bites and chiggers

Permethrin-10 at TSC in the livestock section

Mix 1 part permethirn-10 with roughly 15 parts water in a spray bottle. Shake well before spraying. Cover all your clothes, socks, boots and gear with the spray and let them air dry completely before wearing.

I swear it works very well if your clothing covers you completely, because if the ticks/chiggers have to get through your clothing to bite you then they will die before they ever make it. Last time I was covered in my treated hunting clothes I got no tick or chigger bites, and i was walking through some thick stuff in the woods. Last time I went to hang a stand, I had been fishing and was wearing shorts and a T shirt. I got a few bites and wasn't in the woods much. Get the permethrin, it works and will save you money over the store bought sprays...

Thanks guys for the suggestion. I'm always glad to see that first frost too.

The carbon deal is interesting - I haven't heard of that one yet.

Catman - I'll have to try the Permethrin. I presume it doesn't leave an odor when aired out?

The permanone spray is my first line of defense. It is pretty odorless when it dries. However, as I've said before, it doesn't matter to me if it smelled like a skunk, because it is the most effective thing out there for killing those little bas.... I lost one of my best friends years ago to RMSF, and have two friends right now that are in heavy duty antibiotic treatment for tick diseases, so I hate ticks.

A second GREAT product is a set of the Rhino-skinz or Cabelas Bug-Skinz. They are basically heavy-duty panty hose type nylon material top and bottom that have reinforced knees and elbows for durability. They form a layer with small enough mesh that a tick, even the little seed ticks, can't get through. I'm not sure about chiggers, but I have never gotten any while wearing them. They come in OD green and camo colors. They do add a little warmth, but it isn't that bad to me. I wear it almost every time I turkey hunt when I know I am going to be sitting on the ground for extended periods. The clothing has elastic cuffs to keep the critters out. Las year I got a couple of bites right at the cuff, but have NEVER had anything get under.

scn,

Interesting to hear that the Rhino-skinz actually work.

Tick and other parasite-borne diseases are becoming more and more of a problem, especially as tick-bearing wildlife invade suburbia and more people move into the rural-suburban borderlands.

I developed an allergy to beef (with some very unusual symptoms) back in 1991. Now two of my sisters have this same problem. It turns out this is a tick-borne disease that has been named "Mammalian Meat Allergy," which only affects people living in Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Arkansas. Only the ticks of that area carry the antigen that causes the allergy to mammalian meat.

1- Permanone-nopthing else but
2-Freeze, not frost gets rid of the chicks and tiggers.

I have been eaten alive after three days of hard frost. I this year, seem to be hunting the tick capital of the world. Using Permanone, I got two bites total all year. My sweet doggie had them so bad, I had to take her to the vet for dipping, bathing, pills and shot. to get rid of them all.

I've tried many repellants and nothing works like permethrin. Never got a single tick on me since I started using it on my clothes.

I got some at co-op yesterday. I think 24 or 28 oz for 14.99. 10% Permetherin.

Great stuff. That much should last you for years. To mix it at 0.5% concentration that is the equivalent of Permanone, mix 1 part 10% concentrate with 19 parts water.

That will yield the equivalent of 80 cans of Permanone for about the cost of 3.

My calculation comes to 4.38 gallons a .05% concentration.

I believe in whiskey and garlic the night b4. That way you stink bad enough they stay away and your bloods strong enough to kill the rest....just kiddin

Back before the days of permanone sprays, I would buy two of the cheap dog flea collars and wrap them around my boots. They worked really good but made it hard to walk by a fire hydrant without getting the urge to go.

I am really glad to come across this post. I went hunting in Kentucky last weekend and came back with over 200 bites.. literally.. going to get some premethirin this week.

I HATE these things!
