So I did a lot, I mean a lot of scouting Friday on a new property. Had pants tucked into the boots, long sleeves, and a hat. I get home and find a tick at my knee and my wrists and ankles have bites all over them. Any advice on how to get rid of first the itch and second prevent the ticks?

Next time spray your clothes with Permanone. Apply repellant containing DEET on skin.
The bites around your ankles are propably chiggers. Not much you can do about the itch, benadryl spray works pretty good.

I rarely get ticks when I use Repel or Cutters spray. My problem is managing to get poison oak on my ankles while wearing jeans and rubber boots.

Yep, chigger rid does work but they will die off in a couple of days anyway. I knew an old guy who lived near my cabin that swore if you ate a tablespoon of vinegar daily the ticks would leave you alone...

I carry a lint roller with me.I also wear my muck boots with my pants tucked inside of them.I'll stop every so often and roll my boots and my pants. It keeps them off for the most part.

One word PERMANONE nothing else and plenty of it. One of the worst years I have seen. Had to take doggie to the vet to get them all off.

Poison Oak is a problem I constantly struggle with around the beginning of the season. I have it pretty bad right now. It's gets everywhere no matter how well I cover up. Poison Oak and chigger bites at the same time really sucks.

Doesnt the PERMANONE have a smell when you are hunting?

When it dries it is oderless, or at least very little oder.

However, it doesn't matter to me. It is so good on the ticks that I would not care if it smelled like diesel fuel. I am not going in the woods without spraying down with it.

I have two friends that are in, or have been in, the hospital for multiple days right now for tick borne diseases. It isn't worth the risk to kill the biggest deer out there for me.

Doesn't everything? Reckon deer have been warned to stay away from Permanone but come check out vanilla?
Truth is, I'd just as soon stink as have ticks eat me up. Once it dries, you can't smell it.
:)

I have heard this is a horrible year for ticks, worst in a long time. Deet works pretty good. Like others have said, I would rather smell and hunt the wind than have ticks all over me.

I really don't think they are chiggers, because they are whelped up like mosquito bites, but I will try anything.

That's exactly what a chigger bite looks like--a mosquito bite. However, there is also a type of chigger that only seems to cause problems in August and September that produces a clear, fluid-filled blister. These blister-bites do NOT occur where clothing is tight (like most chigger bites). And these particular type of chigger bites will itch for at least a month.

Just remember the chigger (actually a microscopic mite) is NOT inside the itchy welt. You don't get the itchy welt until after the chigger has fed and dropped off. Chiggers only feed on you (liquify and drink your skin) for a couple of hours. The itchy welt is your bodies allergic reaction to the skin-liquifying chemical the chigger uses. Once you get the itchy welt, the chigger is long gone.

Here is a way to satop the itching permanently. I do this but do not reccommend it for everyone.

Scratch bite until it is completely open and even bleeding. pour small amouth of bleach or really good hot sauce on it. Do not rub or scratch. In a few minutes it will top burning and will never itch again.

Warning-Not for kids or some women-lady-female-women types.

The same cure with bleavh only usually works well on poison ivey-oak but not so well on sumac.

Yes! I tell people all the time that swear putting clear fingernail polish on them helps.. It may help you not to scratch it, but the chigger has done its deed at that point.

I cannot imagine going into the woods in the summer without wearing pants, shirt, socks and hat that have all been sprayed with Sawyers Permethrin. Since I started doing that the bugs fear me. It's like wearing a bug force field. I haven't been bitten in the woods in well over a year. Poison ivy/oak/sumac is another story. I think I get it just by walking by a plant or vine.

I wish, when they first came out with Permanone and I could get it free, I had gotten 10 cases of it. I have a large cedar chest I keep my hunting clothes in. Every few weeks I spray a healthy dose inside it. Don't know if it help permeate the clothing or not but it helps me :)

Definitely taking the advice and spraying down. Luckily, according to the nurse where I work, they aren't chigger bites and were in fact mosquito bites. However the ones on my wrist were chigger bites. PERMANONE here I come.
Thanks to all

Just remember, the permanone is for your clothing. It is not insect repellant like Off, so don't spray it on your skin. Use a good Deet repellant for exposed skin.

I find that to be the case even when I have to crawl through jungle clear-cuts in the middle of the summer. But at this time of year, the little clear-blister chiggers are out, and this year they seem to be particularly bad. I'm getting bitten fairly frequently on my wrists and the backs of my hands. Dang I hate those things!

Not if you use the water based Permethrin and mix your own. Petroleum based does have some odor, but very little.

Bad year for chiggers. After a morning of crawling arund the thicket, so far (two days) I only have four bites. Next time-gloves as well.

I got into a bad case of chiggers squirrel hunting at Laurel Hill WMA. I had hundreds of bites. Did some research. Chiggers are soft bodied spider-like critters and can be killed easily by rubbing your skin. The adivce is to take a shower when you get in from the field and scrub hard with a washcloth. This will take off some of the seed ticks also.

Champho Phenique (I think I spelled that right) works good for me. Use a cotton swab and dab the liquid on each bite. Do that a couple times a day and they won't itch as long.

Deet sprays work faily well but a few of the little nasty's always get by.

There is a much, much cheaper way to get permethrin than buying permanone. Permethrin is the active ingredient in permanone.

Go to Tractor Supply and buy the 10% permethrin concentrate and a spray bottle. Mix the concentrate 1 part concentrate to 19 parts water and you have the same 0.5% concentration as permanone. One small bottle will make gallons of spray for the cost of one can of permanone. I am in the woods almost daily and use it every time I'm out. It flat out works.

BSK---That's exactly what I have. I walked through the woods around my yard and they ate me up. If that wasn't enough I went back for a second dose. In the 23 years I've lived here I've never had chiggers here before.

It is not cheaper for me. By the time I get through paying for all other stuff I simply must have it cost me tons. I can go to Wally and buy just the permanone spray. I get to lookin around in TSC and end up with an ATV and two tons of cow cake and I aint even got any cattle.
