Want to plant a sack full of oats, plan to rent a drill to put them in the ground, but thinking I might could get away with spreading seed right over the grass before a rainfall. It's a cut hay field and I want to have a half acre of something extra for the deer for late season doe hunting. I would mow the grass short before sowing.
My main concern here is all the starlings, would they eat all the seeds before they take root? We recently sowed a bunch of fescue seeds behind the house where some dirt was graded, starlings are here all the time but the grass came up great. Just don't want to lose a bunch of my seeds to the birds, is it a good way to plant them by just throwing?
