Thanks Bucket for your advice on this a month or so ago I done as you said and here is two of my 3 plots i will double the size of them next year

candidate for what they call throw and mow. Spray an area with Roundup in late August and after it is dead spread your rye seed and then mow right before a good rain. The thatch layer holds in moisture and can make a great looking plot. You definitely don't need bare ground.
 
That is looking good! Especially with how dry it's been lately.
