Thoughts on this deer?

Is something weird going on with the color of this deer or is it my inexperience?

black stripe up the back and extremely black tail:

My initial thought was a wound on his back and all the hair missing. But not sure it would be that black. If that's his hair color, that's really cool! Tail looks fairly normal to me. Maybe slightly darker than the norm but nothing really unusual

edit: just seen where you pointed out the black ears. Your text is kinda hidden by the pic. Very cool deer

I think he just caught his rump on a wet branch and wetted/slicked his hair down there

Not a common genetic color variation, but I see it from time to time.

Others are a very black stripe down the back of the neck, and black face down the spine of the nose.
