Sunday morning drop my 14 year old off at a stand site in the woods. I went to a different location and set up. He starts texting me as soon as it gets light saying he is seeing coyotes everywhere. He decides not to shoot one as he is hoping for a nice buck. He sees a coyote 75-100 yards through the woods tearing into something dead. Doesn't have a shot and just watches. Coyote stayed for almost an hour. I walk back to his tree when we are done and we walk over.
Found this 2.5 year old 6pt buck with one messed up side. It had been shot through the brisket in front of the front legs. I turned the deer over and found the exit (maybe entry) wound. No expansion of the bullet at all. No one on our lease killed this deer. Nearest property line is a little over 300 yards and I know people hunt that property. Ran one of them off about 3 years ago during the juvenile hunt.
I don't think it is unreasonable that the deer traveled the 300 yards (minimum) and died on our property.
My question is, did someone come over and cut out the backstraps on this deer? Where the hide is missing from the top of the back down to the back legs looks very precise. Not so much torn like a coyote ripped into it. The other side had not been touched.
Maybe they started the job and got spooked and high tailed it out of there? Can the tear in the hide be that straight?
What are your thoughts?
