Thoughts on LR-308

I have been reading a lot and wanted to search for an all around riflr for the midwest hunting big game and predators. I came to a conclusion an LR-308 would be the best choice. I know it don't make sense to use an AR for deer but hell they don't care where the bullet is coming from and I don't either.....What is your thoughts on the rifle combination....Thanks...

Picked up one today. I got the AP4 with the sights.

Its a good made gun, the only regret on my part is I wish it had a chrome lined barrel.

Armalite is a good brand to look into

I am staying away from the chrome barrel because of it being so bright and might scare my prey away.....Unless there is a good reason to have it of course...You have pictures? May I ask where you bought yours and if it was a good deal....

I have the DPMS LR308-AP4. All AP4's have chrome moly barrels and it will not scare game off because the entire rifle is black and there is no reflection of light. It is a tad on the heavy side topped off with a scope and a 20 round mag, but they do make mags with less capacity. It is a very accurate rifle. One of my favorites but so dog gone expensive to shoot. This is a pic of mine and a target.

What he meant was chrome LINED. Its not a stainless steel barrel just the inside of the barrel is lined with chrome. Lots of AR's have this option. Makes them easier to clean and I think there is no break-in period as well. Hope that helps.

Yeah I didn't mean it was a chrome barrel.

I got mine from a store in Smithville. Belk Grocery

I ended up paying a little over 1100 for mine. My gun is basically the same as Model70's. I'll post up the pics and details when I get it rigged.

I thought the chrome lining was to keep from burning the bbl up when you really have to let some ammo loose quick like,,

The chrome lining is for longevity. Chrome doesn't rust nearly as fast as a regular barrel and it is significantly harder and can take more abuse. If you live in an area with a humid climate, it also helps prevent rust. The downside is accuracy. Chrome lined barrels are supposed to not be as accurate as a non chrome lined barrel. I'm extremely pleased with the accuracy out of mine.

DPMS LR308-AP4 was the 2006 NRA rifle of the year. I love mine. 10 pounds with loaded mag. I use mine for deer and hogs. It is not any heavier than my scoped 300 win mag.

More of us need to carry them in the field to help lessen it' bad EBR reputation.

I love mine.

Chrome lining makes the barrel easier to clean and it lasts longer.Same with chrome lined bolts.

Thanks folks for the replies. Big question? Why would you really need that chromed lined barrel? Is military issue rifles and machine guns lined inside with chrome to keep longer life? I think I would just stick with the normal barrel and get better accuracy. Hell a barrel is not that much money from what I seen.

The other thing i was to menion was that I see a stainless barrel option and that is what I meant to say earlier in my post about scarring away predators and deer.

Other thing, I like a good recommendation on optics for both predator and deer. Something not too expensive but a wide field of view when in close up situations.....

See my post above. Chrome lining also makes it easier to clean. If you look at the top AR manufacturers, they have chrome lined barrels and other chromed features. The only rifles without chrome lined barrels are the target or sniper type setups. In all honesty, you wont know the difference between a chrome lined barrel and a non lined barrel as far as accuracy goes.

For optics, the scope that I have on my AP4 in the pic is a Meopta Meostar R1 1.5-5. Huge field of view and I can easily hit targets at 300 yds with ease using this scope. I shot a buck with this setup last year. A 1-4, 1.5-5, or 2-7 would be a good choice.

Check out the Stag Model 7. It's not a 308 but it's a 6.8mm cal hunting rig.

You know that thing is about 5 pounds lighter. Interesting.
Is there any reviews out yet on this rifle?
How does it compare to the LR-308?
Ammo comparison.....6.8mm seems to be hard to find.
