Well, I ended my season with a 5-year-old buck I've been hunting for two years. He's a typical mature mountain buck that never had the potential to produce a large rack.

With law school exams starting this Friday, I decided I needed a break from studying this morning. I was only going to hunt for a couple hours before heading back and hitting the books again. Study breaks are a good thing!

I was hunting a thick saddle that leds back to several bedding areas. Based on trail camera pictures, I knew this buck was in the area and was bedding nearby. About 45 minutes after daylight, I spotted this guy stepping out of the thicket. I had about 10 seconds to identify him and take the shot before he disappeared. I grunted at him to stop and sent a 140 grain Accubond through both lungs. My season ended at 7:45 am.

I have a lot of history with this buck including 3 years of trail camera pictures. His ear is sliced likely from fighting. He won't score very high, but he certainly is a trophy to me! Since my freezer is full, I donated the meat and hope he feeds a family or two over the holidays. I thank the good Lord for a great season and the opportunity to do what I enjoy most!

Here is a trail camera picture of him earlier this year at one of our survey sites:

Good deal, congrats! Nothing like the old mtn bucks, very fun and rewarding to kill them!

Dude, I'll say this again: You are a one heck of a deer hunter. You should seriously consider writing a book on hunting deer in mountainous terrain. I know you break a lot of "rules" of deer hunting and rely on thermals a lot. Whatever combination of strategies you use is obviously lethal and consistently so.

I'd be a buyer.

Thanks, Poser! I'm in the process of writing an article for Quality Whitetails that talks exclusively about bedding areas in hilly/mountainous terrain. I plan to correlate how my knowledge of bedding areas has increased my success rate.

As a fellow mountain hunter, I applaud you on a great season. Thats a fine deer

I am very interested in reading your article. I don't get that magazine, so if there's any way for you to post or link the article here that would be awesome. Hopefully QW will publish it on their site for public viewing.

Curious what type of lawyer you plan to be. Hopefully one that still has time to hunt quite a bit. Are you planning to focus on anything in particular?

Congrats. You get some nice deer every year. That's something to say when you can harvest mature mountain deer. They are hard to find and hunt.

Congrats on a great hunt. It's always exciting getting to follow a particular buck year after year to finally end up getting him. Well done!
