Think I'm gonna start building a blackout upper.

I have been trying to talk myself out of it for long enough. Now that brass is available and not too expensive, I'm gonna look into it more seriously. I think its a pretty impressive little round, gives performance roughly equal to a 30-30 or 7.62x39 which is nothing spectacular but will easily get the job done for a truck/farm rifle. I like the .223 but I have always been partial to heavier bullets, and I can always throw my .223 upper back on for coyotes.

That's definetly on my 'to do' project list for this year. Still not sure if I can stomach watching all the brass prep work flinging across the field, never to be found :)

As an aside, the round seems to be doing more than adequately for whitetails. I took another one this past weekend with my kids rifle. Big 5.5 yr old doe at 103 yards. High shoulder shot, bang-flop. 125NBT at 2200 fps. Bullet went through both shoulders and exited. Nearside shoulder crushed. 1.5" exit wound.

Still need to do some testing out to 200 yards, but I feel certain the round will be more than capable on whitetails out to 250 or so.

Barnes is making a bullet that just came out that is supposed to open up even all the way down to 1300fps made specifically for this cartridge. I'll give it a try if the 125 ballistic tips don't open up at 200.

now i am not as up too par yet on my knowledge with rifles as i am on pistols, i have seen the blackout but what exactly is it comparible too? .300 blackout i am assuming came from the 300 winchester, if i am wrong please dont laugh.

The 300 comes from the 221 remiington balistics are just a bit better than the 7.62x39 , or you can shorten the 223 case and form them. The cost of the new brass makes forming cost prohibitive.

I have one in the works right now for a short range deer and hog thumper.

It's a .223 case with the neck cut off and the case opened up to accept .308 caliber bullets. Which gives you a wide variety of loading options you can load 125 NBT's supersonic all the way up to 220gr bullets loaded at 1050fps to run through a suppressor with minimal noise. You can do all this using standard AR-15 parts it will function just like a .223/5.56 using all the same parts (bolt,magazines,etc.) all you have to change is the barrel(and some people run a pistol length gas system).

Most people build Blackout uppers with the sole purpose being to run subsonic loads through a suppressor. That being said to make a short and handy package with the suppressor attatched they will register their lower reciever as SBR and pay the tax stamp and use an upper reciever with barrels as short as 7-9" most I have looked at have been 11-13" uppers. There seem to be more SBR uppers on the market than 16" uppers for the .300 Blackout.

There are several 16" uppers available and new ones being announced at SHOT show: Noveske, Daniel Defense, CMMG, Bushmaster, and AAC to name a few.

if it was me id do it in 308
there is nothing the black out/ whisper round can do that you cant do with a .308

trail boss is the powder to use to go sub sonic and u have full power 308 as back up

however the whisper/black out has the cool factor

Yes, the blackout round can do some pretty impressive stuff the .308 can't in the AR platform... it can generate enough pressure subsonic to cycle the bolt on the AR.

A subsonic .308 in the AR platform would just be a single shot and you'd have to recharge it for each subsequent shot. So it's fairly worthless for the application the 300 blackout was designed for.

There's really something cool about dumping an entire mag of 220 grain bullets at 1100 fps downrange and not having anyone hear it a couple hundred yards away :)

would it not cycle due to there not being enough pressure behind the round or what???
