They caught me setting up a ladder stand

I hung a 24' ladder stand today, then used my tractor with Frontend loader to clear three shooting lanes 75 - 100 yards through the woods. As I turned around to head back up one lane, I saw an 8 pt, 6 pt, and doe standing beside a maple tree I had just pushed over.

Not only where they not afraid of my tractor and commotion of pushing over small trees (5" or smaller), they had the nerve to eat a few fresh leaves while watching me set up my hunting stand....

Hope they don't tell "all" their friends. LOL

On a side note: the bucks were hard horned, with the little 6 point rack looking a little red from freshly shedding the velvet.

Those bucks are thinking that they will never be back there again now that you have raised a flag and set up your Fort Knox. I would forget that stand for this season. May-be next season, maybe. :)

Don't worry, they don't know what a ladder stand is or how many legs a horse has. However, it is a little late to be messing around in the woods but as long as machinery was involved, it should not be too big a deal. Same is true if it is an area where deer are use to human traffic. You could march a brass band through the woods I hunt and it wouldn't bother them for long.

The deer around my place are used to seeing me on my machinery. The will usually stand from their beds and watch me work. They do the same thing when my neighbor plants and harvests his beans / corn. I enjoy seeing them let their guard down. I need to start carrying my digital camera or phone while working.

I agree. In 2001, I shot (archery) a mature 9-point buck in the Ft Knox, KY garrison area. (Right beside the basic training barracks). A platoon of trainee soldiers ran by singing cadences, an hour later, I arrowed the buck while he worked a scrape line.

I don't give them human intelligence by any means. They are definitely wary enough to avoid visible deer stands even if they only interpret it as an intrusion in their world. I would even go as far as to say that a mature buck would avoid it forever especially if he ever saw a hunter in it. There is an interesting study in the QDMA magazine on how deer avoid deer stands. I encourage you to read it.

Where did you find a 24' ladder stand? Is this something homemade?

The stand was made by Big Game stands. I went to their web site to look for the model, but don't see this one. I only see their 20' Legacy series. My stand has a similar ladder system with double vertical bars on each side for extra strength.

I'll try to see if it has a data plate with model name or number on it.

Thanks. I have a old ladder stand called the sky scraper, but it is only 22 feet tall, so I would be interested in a 24'.

Will do...but it will be 6 -8 weeks before I hunt this spot...
