Thermal cover

When doing your land improvements How much area are you allowing for thermal cover? How important to you is it? Is there something else that you put more importance in?

I would say that it isn't as important in our area as up north. I'd think security cover would be the most important and with the pines you've planted you will have both in a few years.

I agree - thermal cover doesn't seem to be a huge issue here - but security and beding - yea - for sure - and pins will give that -

do you think that the area out past that cave that we looked at is thermal cover,awful thick,but few evegreens

Thermal cover is an issue, even in the south. Not for the cold as much, but for the intense heat during the summer.

only observation data, nothing scientific.

I see a lot of deer using the cedars as bedding cover in summer when it is hot.

once leaves fall off, they seem to like to bed high where they can see a long way.

When it is really cold for TN, most deer sightings tend to be to/from cedar thickets in the AM.

If they are using it for thermal cover or not I cant say but I have seen enough action to take note on those really cold days.
