The bells are used as a location device while the dogs are not running or opening up.

I know some bear and cat hunters put them on there dogs to keep wolves away .

The bells are mostly for keeping track of tbe dogs but some say it keeps yotes away. I know during the hot summer months ill sometimes run at night, the bells along with lights on collars make me feel a little better but ive heard of yotes getting them when dogs had bells and lights on as well so who knows.
