Now that I feel in my neck of the woods t he rut is over ,I was wondering what some of you thoughts and Ideas were moving forward. Hunting feeding areas or bedding area s.. and so on
 
The period "in between" so to speak has always been the toughest for me. If my freezer is not full, I'll kill a doe or two, but mostly just try to bide my time and tough it out. I'll try to hang with doe groups to see if any late bloomers bring a buck along, or I'll do some in season scouting in new places.
 
It hasn't gotten started full blast where I normally hunt, the place I've been hunting this weekend its in full swing
 
I didn't mean over completely but it's seems to be on its way. I have only seen one buck and he's was chasing about 2 weeks ago I feel your struggles

Its winding down around here. I've only seen one buck chasing a doe, and it was a spike.
 
Done and over here, as well. I haven't even seen a buck since opening morning. I'll be trying my luck still hunting between red oaks with acorns Tuesday morning, hopefully with wet leaves.If I walk up on someone though, I'll TURN AROUND...and not just veer 90* upwind like the guy did me early yesterday morning. :mad:

In December I am happy to even see a doe much less try to kill a nice buck.
 
The best thing to do now is stay out of the woods for a few weeks and try to catch a mature buck coming into a food plot at the very end of season. I have accepted the fact that I probably won't kill a buck this year. The few days the big ones were moving during the day, I was hunting different areas. Lesson learned for next season.
 
Just now getting started here. Saw some chasing this weekend and killed a scrub management buck that was coming to my bleat call.

I'm starting to wise up to the fact that we as hunters educate some nice deer during bow season. I've got a spot I'm going to keep fresh next year till muzzleloader.

That is how I killed my number 1 target last year.....on an Jan 3rd, at dark. I hadn't hunted that farm in 3 weeks and he just strolled right in
 
I had the best rut activity I have ever seen in Hamilton/Bradley county. Around here, the week of November 7 to about the November 16 was unbelievable. There was one day in-between those dates I had 8 mature bucks in daylight hours. That was one day. Of course, I wasn't in my stand . Now, my question is about the second phase. I have several friends that say they have been luckier in the second phase over the years. What is your view about this? They say the big boys will move more in the second phase than the first. On the other hand I have some friends that don't step foot in the woods until november 1st and they are done by late november. What do you guys think?
 
I just saw my first chasing on Saturday. Some have seen it before then. Ours usually hits on or around Thanksgiving. Hope to see more this week.

Yep, you take the pressure off when it turns nice and frigid and those big boys find it hard to resist a turnip or chickory during the day.

The answer to that is going to be a property by property thing. I see the "second rut" on my trail-cams, but to date, I've never witnessed it in person, even though I've hunted that traditional period.

Agreed. Startng this year we had separate bow season stands away from the best areas. Could be a fluke but we killed 2 4 1/2 year olds this year out of the same stand a week apart. And it was Thanksgiving before we finally went to that area
