The first rut is over on my place in central/eastern Giles county but we normally have a decent 2nd. Luckily I got to spend a lot of time in the woods this season and got a complete visual of all phases of the rut like never before. Throughout the month of November I spent an average of 8 hours per day in the woods and there was never any question or doubt about which phase of the rut the deer were in. There were very clear and distinct indicators. In all of my 30+ years of hunting, I had never been able to get such a clear picture from day to day of what phase they were in, watch it unfold and then truly be able to understand it. Although my season isn't over, I havent taken a buck yet but got to see some very nice deer. I could have killed a few but am hoping my son will get a chance at one 3.5 yrs old or older. He is 11 years old and also has let a lot of nice 2 year old bucks go. Hopefully one of us will score before January but if not, the season was still a success; and the 2012 deer season will still go down in history as one of my best seasons ever.
