I'm just going to say it up front, I hate loaning rifles to people. They don't seem to show the same amount of care for guns as I do. I realized today, however, that after I complete my latest project I'm going to have an action and enough stuff to put together a spare rifle. The Loaner as I've named it.

I'm torn as to which barrel I'm going to use though. It's a long action Remington 700 (blued) and my current choice of barrels are either 270 Win or 30-06. I've got 2 each caliber, one standard contour (blued) and one mountain rifle (stainless) contour of each.

So the question is, which setup would you deem best for a loaner rifle? A universal, "buddy's in a pinch and needs a gun" type rifle. Voice your opinions below.

I bought a 35 Whelen barrel for my CVA APEX man I like the caliber. But to answer your question 270.

The first bolt action I've ever had is a Savage 110 in 30/06 and I put a Bell and Carlson stock on it and slapped an old Leopold VX2 on it. Its become my loaner cause short of bending the barrel I Dont much care what happens to it. Its probably the most accurate rifle in my safe.

Its not bad for a 30 yr old rifle I received as a kid and its done its share of work over the years. I loaned it to a friends son and he took a nice Missouri buck with it last year.

Looking over some load data I think I'm gonna go with the 30-06 24" barrel and set it up for 180 gr Partitions. Should be able to push them to 2850ish, which will be a pretty good thump. AND, I've got a bunch of 30-06 brass that I probably wouldn't use otherwise.

I would do the 270. Main reason is that if someone needs to borrow a rifle, they likely do not have much experience with them. Any lesser amount of recoil could only help that situation. A 270 throwing 130 gr. pills would probably be best for that person.

BUT, if you want them to borrow once and get there own, lightweight '06 with steel buttplate, setup to shoot 180 grain ammo :)

Ditto, LOL

Good choice

Finally got it all cobbled together. 30-06, 3-9x50 Redfield Revolution, DNZ Medium mount, LA Mag XCR Remington stock and tuned the trigger to 2.5 lbs. (excuse the mess, I need to straighten up a little).

Measured for my COAL for the 180 Partitions (3.445" to the lands), gonna try some of the Hodgdon Superformance and see how big of a thump she'll make.

just about any powder will work in 30-06 with 180`s,,4350 H414 should be as far as yo have to look for a load,,but anything from 3031 up to RL22 would work in a pinch,,

one reason I like 308 and 30-06,,as long as you can get primers you should be able to make what ever powder and bullets you can find to work,,

Very true. I use H4350 and 168 gr Ballistic tips in my "Non-Loaner" 30-06. I picked up the Superformance powder a while back and haven't used any of it. I'm hoping it likes the 180s just so I can use it up lol. I wouldn't exactly classify it as a versatile powder.
