The Deer Paradox

I hate when non-hunters complain about how easy it is to to kill a deer, "I See them along the side of the road all the time" or "I wish you hunters would kill more deer so-and-so's daughter hit a deer on the way home from work the other night".

The article hit a great point, there are a lot of deer right now, because there is a lot of food and very few predators. A lot of food in the gorgeous subdivisions with nice 1 acre wooded lots filled with trees, plants, gardens and required "green areas" are just perfect for deer. But go ask one of these subdivisions if you can hunt their "green scapes" and see what your answer is. "I don't want my kids to see a dead animal", That's too dangerous to be done near our house", or "That's just cruel". Heck, the town my grandparents dairy farm was in, has completely banned hunting in it's limits. It drives me crazy to think the land I grew up learning to hunting deer, squirrels, pheasants, and rabbits is now a subdivision and golf course than has banned hunting drives me crazy.

Those people would much rather complain about the deer eating their plants, hitting them with their cars and saying its hunters faults for not killing enough of them, than allow the natural cycle of life take place.

Very humorous article.

But three points: first, deer were not scarce 100 years ago due to habitat loss. They were scarce due to unregulated market hunting. Virtually all of the deer in the Eastern U.S. had been killed for sale to grocery stores as food (that is why it is now illegal to sell wild game animal meat).

Second: even with all the high-tech gadgetry used by hunters today, deer are still easily able to outmaneuver today's hunters. Deer are shockingly good at avoiding us as long as we live by self-imposed rules of "fair chase."

Third: today's hunters use gadgets so they they don't have to learn how to hunt. Gadgetry is used as a short-cut to skills that require a lifetime to learn.
