I started the thread in Fishing but now we have a watercraft forum, so here is my new thread where I'll post updates once in a while.

The boat is a 1969 McKenzie Cherokee 13' 8" V-hull aluminum boat.

Until today, it had the original transom and rivets.

Plans for the upgrade include...

New transom
New deck/bench seats
New seats
Live well
Rod holders (6)
LED light bar
Interior lights
Bilge pump
Strip and paint trailer
New depth finder, if I have enough money left.

Today I got rid of the old rotted transom. It was braced well enough that it still supported the 35 Merc, although it was warped.

I have 3/4" marine ply to build the new transom.

Nice man. Keep us updated. I have a project coming up on my 14ft mod-v also. Some great stuff on YouTube on this. I'd definitely check out fireant fishing, Michael Lopez, jds outdoors, and bassin nw503 if nothing else to get some ideas. I plan on stealing ideas from all of those guys.

If you steal ideas from them, don't steal their hinges. Piano hinges are a lot better to use. Every time I see someone put a 2" hinge on a lid I want to jump in the screen and smack them.

Goodness yes those are terrible. Scratch my head every time I see it

It's been a while since an update, but the transom boards are drilled, sanded, and in process of being painted right now.

I'm using this deck stain/sealant which has the consistency of white paint, but supposed to be pretty good against the elements.
