48 grains of imr 4227 and a 250 grain barnes expander
if you have some Accurate Arms 5744, give it a try. It does great for me.
very cool! its alot fun experimenting with different loads just got some n120 and lookin for the right combo for a 300gn. barnes.

Oh it is a killer bullet for sure. The only thing about it is at long ranges of say 200 plus yds. It is not near as stable as say from 175 in. I think it is because of the big open hollow point design of the bullet. There are a lot of people who use the hornady sst bullet with great results and it reaches way out there. I just have not been able to get that one gun to give me the grouping with that bullet that I like. My other gun shoots the barnes original 45-70 with the orange sabot really good at 200 plus yds. As for killing deer 200 yds.and under that barnes exp will do you fine. You might try it in the 250 gr. also. It had almost the same impact point at 100 yds as the 300 grain did for me. When the weather is hot like it is now it is hard to get a really true reading on accuracy since the heat can effect the sabot performance which is key for the Savage. It is best to shoot early or late in the day and give about 15 minutes between shots to allow barrel to cool. Also another thing is the Savage seems to perform better with a dirty barrel. By that I mean do not swab it in between shots. Other than taking the breechplug out a couple times to change my vent liners I have not cleaned either of mine going on 3 years which is the big plus of the SAVAGE .There are some really good sources of info on this site that can help you with various load ideas. I use a barrel cooler made of 4 in pvc pipe and 1/2 in. aluminun rod sanded down for tight fit. shoot every 3 minutes barrel is actually cool to the touch after rod comes out.
