I managed to put it together this morning!
I hiked about a mile uphill to the spot I'd been seeing birds roost in the fall (I roosted 2 hens & 4 Jakes last night in a different spot, but I kinda busted myself) & got set up around 5:30 this morning.
Within 30 minutes, I had hens & jakes firing off all around me, clucking & yelping & really getting me excited. They started to fly down around 6:15 & landed on the crest of a roll in the field 76yds from me & started walking straight away.
There were still treed hens on both sides of me, clucking & yelping so I pulled out my one turkey call (a cheap HS pot) & started trying to imitate what I was hearing. A few gobbles in the distance told me that I wasn't totally out of tune
Right around 7am, the flock of Jakes started coming right back at me & worked their way in to a range that I was convinced I would get busted, so I elected to take the biggest one of the flock. (Or whichever got closest first.....)
Put my dot in the middle of his neck at 32 yards & that was all she wrote for him!
Y'all's advice about calling, staying put & being patient really paid off for me & got me my first ever turkey on my first ever hunt!
He's not impressive, by the standards I've seen on here, but I really could not be any happier! It's not often you get to try something for the first time at 50 & now I see why you're all mental for these things!
Couldn't tell you what he weighed, but I got 6lb 7oz of meat (legs & breasts) & my first fan for the wall! I can't wait to do it again next weekend!
