Ha ha, I'm glad it worked for you. I haven't used that trick in many, many years, but it's a neat thing to know if you need to gather some bait. :)

I rinsed em off in the river to help get off any excess walnut juice. So far almost all of them survived and I put them into cups and ended up with well over 100. Not including the ones my friend took since we were both gathering the worms.

I fly fish most of the time these days, but "back in the day" when I used bait a lot, I'd use the walnut trick to gather a whole bunch of nightcrawlers without a lot of effort. I kept them in a big metal washtub in the crawlspace under my house and fed them coffee grounds and veggie scraps like bits of lettuce and apple peels. A lot of times I could gather enough bait for a whole season in one shot. I'd keep a thick layer of moist paper towels on top of the dirt to keep the worms happy and deter them from crawling out.

You do have to rinse the worms off after you gather them but other than that it's a neat trick.

Yeah if I get a good container I am making a worm bed sometime. After a while, I bet those worm castings would make killer soil amendment.

Gil got me started on fly fishing but I haven't got my own fly rod or tackle yet. I am scared now, it seems that you fly fishing types abandon all other fishing methods and I'm afraid that will happen to me if I buy a fly rod one day. Bait fishing is one of my favorite pastimes... ;)
