Peyton Manning's tribute to victims of Chattanooga shootings

It was a silent tribute, one not even his closest teammates knew about.

For the first five games of the 2015 season, Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning inscribed the initials of the Chattanooga shootings victims on the inside of his cleats, he revealed that in an ESPN 30 for 30 Short called "Chattanooga Strong." Four Marines and a Navy sailor were killed in the July 16 rampage.

As members of the military, these people understood they took on an inherent risk when they traveled into combat zones abroad. But to be gunned down in their own country on an ordinary summer day was deeply disturbing.

"You kind of expect it when they go to war in Afghanistan and Iraq," said Cathy Wells, the mother of Lance Corporal Skip Wells. "You know the danger is there. You know that there's a chance. No, not here."

Days after the shooting, Manning established the Chattanooga Heroes Fund to raise money for the families of the victims. The fund raised more than $1 million as Denver cruised out to a 7-0 start.

"It makes you angry," Manning, who maintains a home in Chattanooga, said in the piece. "And so you try to funnel that into trying to help. Been able to have a couple conversations with them over the phone to check on [them], see how they're doing and to let them know that we started this fund. Hopefully they can take some comfort knowing that a lot of people are thinking about them and praying for them and care about them."
