I was beleive it or not i was flipping 3/8 oz crawfish color jigs on the southside of the bays in about 2 to 3ft of water around logs or crappie mats.We put out at bumpus mills and i never left salin creek if that helps some.
 
I have fished their several times.I like to use a fluke with no weight on them with a swivel so it not kink your line.I have had alot of luck with this set up early their don't fish it fast just keep it kind of slow.Use the flake color or shad color and have a jig as a back up ready also.
 
It was well into the 50's in the creeks Saturday on KY lake, but I suspect they have fallen into the mid to upper 40's by now.

I fished a 30 boat tournament Saturday. Had 16.84 and got smoked. Took 25.19 to win. All four sacks ahead of us had over 21lbs. Freakin lake is gettin unreal. Big fish was 8.39!

RatLtraps and 100 bandits are what we caught em on. The big sack was supposedly caught on spinnerbaits.
 
What part of the lake username? We always fish our club tourney there the first weekend of May every year, but by then, the buckbrush is flooded and everybody is flipping the brush. Usually takes at least 30 lbs for 2 days to place. We put in at Buchanan's.
 
Around the New Johnsonville area mostly. I suppose that's considered the middle of the lake.

I fish from the I40 bridge to the Paris bridge most of the time.

The first week of May is legendary for flippin. Look for layed down willows and bushes in 3' of water near the creek channel and you shouldn't have much trouble catching 30lbs in 2 days.

There's only one timeframe better for catching 20+lb and that is post spawn in the first part of June on ledges with deep diving crankbaits. Although I have had 30lb days (not during a tourney of course)in the bushes but they don't last long. After about 3 days, they get overrun with 3lb fish it seems. Catch 5 of them and go throw a rig on the point adjacent to those spawning areas for a couple of kicker fish.

Where exactly is Buchanan's? Isn't that close to Paris Landing?
 
Yeah. It's in Eagle creek right at the split of Big Sandy and the lake just south of the 79 bridge. In our tourney last year, we had like 28 lbs for two days and was 4th or 5th, but like you said, they were all 3 lb fish. We couldn't get a kicker. I've done real well down near Lick and Leatherwood creeks that time of year. We also got on em good with crankbaits and spinnerbaits along an old sunken roadbed and bridge back in Eagle and caught a 19.55 lb sack there year before last on the first day. Just kept making passes up and down it. Occasionally threw a rig when we quit catching em chunking and winding. I'm heading down there to prefish a couple weekends before we fish on May 2-3. Can't wait.
 
There are a couple big fish spots that I know of in Lick but they usually dont fire up until later in May or early June. If the fish spawn out a little earlier, they'll probably be good when your there.

Leatherwood has one spot that is a killer for a kicker fish on a big worm about the same time those spots in Lick fire up. Its a pretty deep creek that has one little bend in the channel where theres about a 4' shear ledge that goes from 18-22'. Its the deepest place I've caught big fish on the lake. It's generally only good for one bite but if throw a a plum Baby Huey in there, you better hold on!

Holler at me closer to your tournament, and I'll give you a couple coordinates.
 
Btw, don't overlook Standing Rock creek. There's a real good kicker fish spot or two in there that have been known to pay off. It is an absolute nightmare with much more than a 10mph SW wind though. It comes all the way down Big Sandy, across the TN River, and straight up Standing Rock with a venegence. Then top it off with about 20 36' yacht's cruisin around and it get interestingt real quick! :)

I was just about to post about that! We caught 20 of our 28 lbs last year in Standing Rock. That's right past the bridge to the south at the split on the Tn River side, right? Has the restaurant right on the water, I think. We got a nice dose of eye candy once the girls started gettin liquored up and dancing in there bikinis on the deck! Live band, us catching good fish and watching eye candy......I will never forget that place! Severe storms rolled in on day one last year and muddied up our spots and we weighed in like 3 fish that went 8 lbs. We knew we had to run to find fish, and my buddy tells me about Standing Rock and we run over and catch over 40 fish the next day and weigh in 20 lbs. It's hard for me to run on the lake with much wind. I have a 17 ft Bass Tracker with a 40 hp motor. I get blown all over the place when it gets rough out there.
 
Standing Rock is the the first creek on the east side of the river, south of the 79 bridge. I havent noticed a restaurant but there could be one in the back, I guess. The spot I fish in there is near the mouth of the creek.

There's one over across the river close to where you launch at called Fat Daddy's or something.
 
Yes, that's the creek I'm talking about. The restaurant/bar is towards the back of the creek on the south side. Lots of party boat traffic in that creek, but it was worth it. We found a little ditch that ran in back there an it was loaded. Don't know about the spot at the mouth. Is it a hump or ledge?
 
It's actually a sunken brush pile on a little point the creek channel wraps around. It's actually probably mid ways back in the creek where it swings up close to the south bank. The little point is small and doesnt contour with the bank. I call those lttle points, little titties. :) It runs north/south parallel to the bank. You can probably find it on a decent contour map.
 
I think I know where you're talking about. We had one guy in our club who sat in this creek similar to what you're describing all day long while we were in there. We were further down from there on the south bank. He said there was a little hump or depth change out off of the treeline that didn't really go with the lay of the land if you looked at the bank. Maybe we can get together and fish before the tourney or plot some coordinates on a map. I appreciate you taking the time to share the info alot!
 
Aint no problem man. It's tough to cipher out a lake you don't fish much.

Get with me in the spring and we'll go fish one day. I don't have a ton of spots that far north but I have a few. Thats a good time to stick a big smallie around Paris too. I have no sure fire spots for them but theres some great big ones around there. I generally hit them by accident close to the river and they're usually big. 4-5lb.

Thanks. I usually fish Watts Bar but maybe there will be some relation.
