Im getting ready to work up my TC Hawken 50cal. Its a early-mid 70s kit gun(My stepdad built it was I was about 12 or so). Anyway I had been shooting 90grn of pyrodex with 320gr or 300gr conicals of various brands also using CCI mag no. 11 caps. Never really got great accuracy so this year I thought I would settle on maxi-ball 320gr and work up a load of pryodex.

Figure I start with 80grs at 25yds to get on paper. Then move to 50yds and work up the pyrodex load from 80grs to 90 seeing where I get my best accuracy -- then stretch it out to 100 see where I am at accuracy wise. You guys think that is a good plan? or you got recommendations for me? Got to give it a good scrub first, OH also how many shots before I swab between shots during sight in, and once satisfied with the accuracy should I leave the barrel as is or clean it?
 
My old TC Hawken likes 85 grs of ffg blackpowder and a 200 gr Hornady XTP sabot or a patched roundball. Never could get anything heavier to stabilize consistently out to 100 yards with the slow twist. I use RWS #11 primers.
 
Hopefully I can start working this up SAT after morning squirrel hunt. May end up trying your recipe. I like the old Hawken but if I need to I will get a more modern ML for this deer season.

Most of the 50 cals I got now or have had like powder loads of 70-90 grains of pyrodex R (ff) and either great plains or buffalo bullets in the high 300s to low 400s. Have always shot good with good accuracy. Seems like the best all around powder load for my type of hunting range is 80 grains with either the great plains or buffalo bullet.
