Got a model 70 w syn stock. was wanting to shorten the butt end a little. Any suggestions or warnings?
 
Take the butt pad off and look at it. If its hollow then I would say that you can't. If its solid then you might be able to but their is still a chance it may be hollow inside. You could try it and just plan to buy a new stock if it is. Apparently, there is no one on here who has done it with that model of rifle. If you successfully cut the stock your buttpad will no longer be the right size which you may be able to grind it down with a belt sander without it looking too bad. If you can't then you will probably need to get a grind to fit pad. I have never cut a plastic stock but I have cut down wood stocks. If you have a chop box, it is real easy. Just wrap tape around the area you are going to cut, mark the top of the stock where you want to cut, put it on the chop box, and cut it. If you don't have a chop box then there is a little more measuring involved because you want to get the angle right. Here is a video out on youtube put out by Midway on how to do it.

It's probably hollow...

I thought about this hard when building a rifle for my 5 yr old boy.

I decided that it would be possible to chop the stock, then fill the butt end with epoxy. You would then be able to grind down the butt plate and mount it with screws into the dried epoxy.

In the end, I decided it would be easier to work with a wood stock, so I found a beater for $25, sanded it down and chopped it off to 10" LOP, refinished it and installed a flip-flop for the butt pad. With the refinished wood stock, the gun actually looks great. When my kids outgrow the stock, I'll just put the barreled action into a longer stock.

Not the greatest but it works.
even if it's hollow you can cut it down, make a filler plate out of plastic to distribute the recoil, epoxy it to the but, and use a slip on limb saver but pad.
 
Was thinking about the epoxy thing to. What could I grind a rubber butt plat with?
