Any chance a mature buck survives a through and through through the gut/stomach area?

Well, after a couple of weeks of worrying thinking I had this deer dead never to be found by me or crippled up, my brother actually found him yesterday. He had circled around from where I had hit him and went about 200 yards from where i shot him into a small creek. It was bittersweet, because I hated to lose the meat, but I do have something to remember him by.

Re: Surviving odds

Can't imagine they would. Infection will set in and get him if he doesn't die of other complications first. Hard to live with your digestive system blown out.

Re: Surviving odds

I know, right. Looked all around, tracking dog, water sources, not even the buzzards are cooperating. He laid down about 10 yards from where I shot, but only resting his belly i believe. Found 2 palm fulls of blood, 1 on each side of his belly and that was it. Wasn't sure i even hit him because he was at the edge of some slightly thick woods and the sun was at a bad angle. I waited 20 min. after the shot and he made no moves from what I could see. I must have kicked him up while i was walking towards him but i couldn't tell which way he went. Looked all around that day and even got a dog the next. Not another drop or much scent for the dog to go on. Just wondering if he was hit hard enough to lay down so soon did his adrenaline kick in and he went to the next county? This is not heavy woods at all. The only real thick areas are the powerline right of ways that I shot him out of.

Re: Surviving odds

Sun at a bad angle. Shooting through thick woods. Only waited 20 minutes and jumped him up. That's a recipe for losing a deer dang near every time.

Re: Surviving odds

The sun didn't affect my shot and he was in waist high clear cut. He was at the edge of the thick woods when i shot. The sun affected my ability to see into the thick woods edge, kinda hard to explain. I figured he was down since i didn't hear anything or see anything so i waited 20 just to be sure.

Re: Surviving odds

Inside the abdomen is normally a dead deer somewhere in the near future. If you stayed in backstraps or outside the cavity likely he will live.

Re: Surviving odds

My buddy just shot a deer with a slug gun deer still made it over a 100 yards. Crazy thing is he had another slug in him and was still going about as normal. Deer amaze me at times.

Re: Surviving odds

Is there a chance you hit him low and maybe grazed the guts low, but really didn't hit anything else? You may get that gut smell, but may not have hit anything to kill him. If you hit him square in the guts, it may take a while, but he is dead.

Man that's a great buck. Your euro mount will be easier now. Hate you lost the meat but glad you got closure and your rack! Congrats

That's pretty dang good guess right there. My buddy came over to see it because he also helped me look for it for miles, lol. He put a tape to it and came out to 146 and some change. Looking for a good cape. I have enough Euros, this one's going to be on the wall.
