I've heard some people say they had a problem with deer eating their sunflowers prior to putting on a head, not sure if they actually eat the flowers. We planted several acres this year and last and have not had any issues, but we have corn planted next to the sunflowers, so maybe that helps.

That being said, I watched a hunting show a few weeks ago where they were actually hunting deer over a huge sunflower field, somewhere in Kansas I think.

So, yes, deer will eat some part of the sunflower plant.
 
Cool, thanks. We planted a sunflower field next to our pea patch, next to the clover. Were trying to see what works best for the future for deer. Maybe get a dove hunt or 2 out of it to.
 
I've never planted them, but like others, I have heard they browse on them heavily prior to heading out. I've read about people planting peas in with them to give the peas something to climb while/after the heads have been eaten.
 
We've got about a half acre of sunflowers planted this year and have been getting almost as many pics of deer feeding in them as we have our Eagle bean plots. We didn't really plant them for the deer but hey...whatever works.

I believe Whitetail Institue has a summer plot mix that has sunflowers as part of the blend. Might be something I try in the future
 
Thanks for all the feedback,Blount thats funny you said mix them because thats exactly what we did. They are wearing them out. Flowers are about 5ft tall now, and the peas are about 3ft tall. I think we nailed it this year, if I can figure out how to post pictures of the plots I will.
 
Cool, man. I would love to see some photos. I think you've inspired me to plant the mix myself next year. I've been thinking about it for awhile and really have no good reason as to why I haven't yet!
