Sunflowers

I was wondering what the best way to plant about an acre plot of them. I've turned the ground over with a plow and ran the disc over a few times. Do you use a corn planter or can I just broadcast? Also I've seen someone on here use seeds bought at Walmart and planted them. What about weed control too? All I've ever planted is RR corn. Ideas Ps -- this is mainly for dove.

An acre may work,deer have always wiped mine out as soon as they sprout.

I've always just broadcast/covered the plain old Black Oil sunflowers onto a moderately prepared seedbed and they've done well. They're fast growers and compete well against weeds so I've never really had to spray.

Like FH mentioned though, the deer can be pretty hard on them early on.

I know Justin (jmb4wd) planted some last year that were just bird seed like you buy from walmart, they turned out pretty good. Not sure if he drilled them or just broadcast tho, sure he'll chime in when he gets on here next time.

I had a pretty good stand last year, I just bought black oil seeds from Lowes.

What I did is burn the ground with gly at least 2 times, so that it is basically dirt, and I notilled mine in with my planter.

I would say as long as you could disc a couple of times a week or two apart and kill the weeds back, you will be fine broadcasting them.
