Went and checked my lumberjack set and when I pulled up to it I was getting pretty ill because I can't figure out what I am doing wrong.

Upon further inspection:

Didn't look like a very big deer.
I can only imagine trying to hold a deer down and turn it loose. LOL

Only me.

Been there and done that, deer are nosey, I have seen where they go to a set and walk around until they throw the trap, just curious about the smells I guess.

Did you use any urine at the set ? if so they were attracted to the salt in the urine.

Put some red fox urine on the backing.
I just wish I had a video of the deer when that trap snapped. :D

Had this happen last tuesday , made the set came back the next day and found this

if you look closely you can see the rabbits foot sticking out of the jaws and pieces of fur scattered around, at first I was confused as to what happened then I found a several small feathers from the under belly of a redtailed hawk laying nearby. Things started coming together afterwards, I had baited my dirthole applied a little lure and sprayed yote urine on a little cedar bush i used for backing. What happened was the rabbit came in attracted to the salt in the urine and hit the trap ( I had maybe 1 -2 lbs tension on this particular trap ) he was struggling and 1 of the 2 doz. hawks we see everyday swooped in for an easy meal. I remade the set yesterday

so here in a few hours I'll see if I got lucky with my intended target.

Wow, that's crazy.

Reminds me of a friend that heard all heck breaking loose one night behind his house.
He went the next morning and he had caught a female lab in his trap and some coyotes found her. They apparently attacked and killed her.
I wouldn't look at the pictures but he said it was pretty ugly.

Thanks Songdog, it's hard to see but my dirthole is smack in the middle of the little cedar bush, where the limb shadows the hole about 6 inches from the big rock on the left. I placed the rabbit foot in the hole also along with the fur still scattered around I figured it couldn't hurt.
