It must be getting closer to the rut to start thinking about some things but this has been on my mind and thought I would share it. Having trapped cats and canines in a bunch of states across the country I know how many dogs are running at night in rural TN. In some places a huge number of them. I know, I have caught them but nothing like the huge number of pitbulls that run around South Georgia. Big old wise bucks have something in common with me, the older the bucks the less stress they want in their life during the year. Stress being dogs, disturbance in bedding areas, commotion, you name it. No question stress has a huge importance in antler growth. I know the massive antlered bucks that grow up on suburban Atlanta golf courses have very little stress and generally have very low body weights.

I know people who just can't figure out why they don't have mature bucks on their property or lease when they ride 4-wheelers night and day all over their property all year long. I bet you do to.

Find areas that adjoin stress free or less stressed deer environments and your mature deer hunting success may increase. Those bucks will come out of those golf courses, private farms, wooded parks during the rut. Find the girls and the boys will follow. Mature bucks aren't young bucks. You are talking two different animals here........

My advice is to be there when the second estrus is in full swing. There's even less stress on hunters! Thanksgiving is over and invariably fewer people hunting.

Great point. I heard from a gentleman who raises trophy deer and his number one reason for poor antler growth was stress on bucks.
